Bangkok - Big city, little time

Ich erreichte Bangkok in der prallen Mittagshitze, leider zu spät um noch die letzte Fähre zu meinem Endziel - Koh Chang - zu erreichen. Mein Plan war es dort für drei Wochen zu bleiben und in einem Gästehaus zu arbeiten. Doch bevor es früh am nächsten Morgen in mein vorübergehenden Zuhause gehen sollte, hatte ich noch einen Nachmittag in der großen Stadt.

Aus Zeitgründen entschied ich mich gegen eine große Sightseeing Tour und sah mir lediglich einen Tempel mit angeschlossener Schule und einen (sehr kleinen) Nachtmarkt an. Außerdem nutzte ich die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten in der Stadt um einige nötige Dinge zu besorgen (wie ein Ladekabel) - denn wer wusste, wie gut ich auf der Insel an solche Dinge herankam. Auch das Busticket für den nächsten Tag kaufte ich von einer sehr netten Dame, die mir vorschlug (nachdem ich dreimal nachfragte, wo denn der bus nun abfahre), am nächsten Morgen vor Abfahrt einfach bei ihr vorbeizukommen und sie würde mich dann zum Bus bringen. 

Ein bisschen Zeit blieb mir auch in Bangkok, um die ersten Eindrücke der thailändischen Küche zu bekommen - und die waren sehr gut! Am Abend probierte ich meinen ersten scharfen Papayasalat und am nächsten Morgen kaufte ich bei Straßenhändlern neben dem Busbahnhof eine Art salzigen Reisbrei und frische Mango. Nur thailändischer Kaffee ist leider ungenießar! Er wird eher wie Tee zubereitet und steht stundenlang auf dem Ofen, sodass er eigentlich immer verbrannt schmeckt.

So gestärkt machte ich mich mit Bus, Fähre und "Taxi"* auf den Weg nach Lonely each auf Koh Chang. Schon einige Wochen zuvor hatte ich beschlossen in Thailand in einem Hostel oder Ähnlichem zu arbeiten. Ich hatte über die Seite "Workaway" Kontakt zu mehreren Unterkünften aufgenommen und mich, nachdem nur sehr wenige geantwortet hatten, für BB Lonely Beach entschieden. Je näher mein Aufenthalt kam, desto mehr freute ich mich, doch im Bus dorthin dorthin kamen auch einige Zweifel auf: Würden die Leute nett sein? Würde die Arbeit mir Spaß machen? Wie würde die Unterkunft sein?

I reached Bangkok in the midday heat, too late to catch the bus to my final destination, Koh Chang, where I was planning on working in a guesthouse for the following three weeks. Thus I had one afternoon to spend in the big city before I took the first bus to the island southeast from Bangkok the next morning.

Due to the small amount of time I had I decided against a big sightseeing tour and just explored the area around my hostel and the Ekkamai bus station. I went to a temple and a very small night market. Also, I went shopping for some items I desperately needed but was not sure, whether I could get them everywhere on the island (like a new phone charger). Finally, I still had to buy my bus ticket to Koh Chang. After doing some research I decided to purchase a ticket for the "government bus" from the bus station directly. A very good decision, because the lady who sold the ticket to me was so nice, and even offered to escort me to the bus the next morning - after I asked her for the third time where exactly the bus would leave.

Even though my time in Bangkok was very limited, it was enough to get a first impression of the Thai cuisine, which I like a lot! In the evening I tried my first spicy papaya salad and in the morning I bought Thai breakfast from some vendors next to the bus station: fresh mango and salty overcooked rice with ginger. Only Thai coffee is not very good. The coffee powder is left in the water (like a tea) and it is kept on the stove for several hours so it always tastes a little burnt.

Then it was time to leave the city for Koh Chang - first by bus, then ferry and finally a "taxi"*. It had been weeks since I had decided to find a hostel or guesthouse on one of the islands in Thailand to work there for a couple of weeks. I had found several on the website "Workaway" but only few replied so I decided for the guesthouse BB Lonely Beach on Koh Chang. The closer the date of my arrival on Koh Chang had gotten the more excited I got. But sitting on that bus, I suddenly had doubts: What if I did not like it there - the people or the whole place? Would I like the work?
