27. Tag - day 27 (for english scroll down)

Das Highlight des Tages war ein Heli Flug durch den Grand Canyon. Schon früh morgens (wieder mal :-)) gings los zum Flugplatz. Von der Schweiz aus hatte ich den Flug gebucht, aber man konnte die vorderen Plätze nur vor Ort gegen einen Aufpreis buchen. Das wollen praktisch alle. Also werden alle gewägt und geschaut, dass der Heli ausbalanciert wird. Dementsprechend wird dann entschieden wer wo sitzt. Um unserem Glück noch ein bisschen nachzuhelfen, sagte ich, dass es Zoë's Geburtstag wäre (was ja fast stimmte). Was es auch immer war, kurz darauf war ich 100$ leichter und wir sassen vorne neben dem Piloten :-) Mir kamen fast die Tränen vor Freude! Mit den Kopfhörern konnte man gut kommunizieren und der Pilot machte immer coole Musik dazu. Wir machten die grosse Tour - 50 Minuten. Erst gings über Wälder nach Norden und dann fragte er ob wir Indiana Jones oder Starwars Musik wollten. Indiana Jones war’s dann und dazu sind wir über dem Plateau ins nichts runter zum Canyon geflogen. Das Gefühl war extrem krass, ein Angstschreichen löste sich aus meiner Kehle, aber alles gut - es war halt einfach atemberaubend! Wir sprachen kein Wort. Muksmäuschen still sassen wir da und absorbierten das fast schon spirituelle Erlebnis. Zwischendurch machten wir einige Fotos, weils einfach nicht anders ging - so zum Beispiel als wir eine Herde Büffel sahen.... Wie in Trance landeten wir und mein Herz zersprang fast vor Glück! Dann machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Visitor center wo wir über einen eindrücklichen Film lernten wie der Canyon überhaupt entstand. Dann machte sich ein Hüngerlein spürbar und wir kauften in einem Geschäft ein kleines Picknick, liefen zum Rim, genossen die Aussicht wieder aus vertikaler Perspektive und waren einfach zufrieden. Doch bald stach die Sonne immer mehr und die Hitze machte ein entspanntes Verweilen schwierig. Deshalb gingen wir auf eine Siesta ins Hotel. Gegen 4 Uhr machten wir uns auf den Weg westlich des Rims - wo der Sonnenuntergang am schönsten ist und die Sonne nun nicht mehr so brannte. Wir fuhren mit einem Schuttlebus bis ans Ende und liefen ein grosses Stück zurück, die Sonne im Rücken, die wunderschöne Natur um uns herum, die Vögel über uns und wir vertieft in Gespräche über die Zukunft. Herrlich. Zurück im Hotel setzten wir uns auf die Veranda, bestellen Zoë ihr erstes Chili, tanken Cocktails und schauten der Sonne zu wie sie im Horizont verschwand. Man o man haben wir's gut....

The highlight of the day was a Helicopter flight through the Grand Canyon. Early morning (again...) we headed towards the airport. I did book the flight from Switzerland already, but I could not book the front seats. The front seats are very popular. Therefore the people get weighted to balance the Helicopter and then it is being decided who sits where. To push our luck a little I did mention that it was Zoë's birthday (which was nearly true). I don't know what it was, but a few minutes later I was allowed to pay 100$ surplus and got the front seats. I had tears in my eyes I was so happy! With the headsets we could communicate good with each other and the Pilot put some cool music on. We booked the long tour - 50 minutes. First we flew over forest towards north and then he asked us which music we wanted. Indiana Jones or Starwars. We opted Indiana Jones and in that moment we flew over the plateau down into the Canyon. The feeling was extreme and a little scare-scream came out of my throat. But I was fine - it was just so breathtaking! We didn't speak. We were quiet as a mouse, just sat there and absorbed the nearly spiritual experience. In between we had to take some pictures because we could just not avoid it like when we saw a horde of Buffalos! Like in trance we landed and my heart nearly burst of joy. From there we went to the visitor center where we learned through a very informative film how the Canyon emerged. Thereafter we felt a little hungry, so we got a picnic from the grocery shop, took it to the Rim and enjoyed the view from a vertical perspective - totally content. But soon the sun shone so strong and the heat became unbearable so that a relaxed stay was impossible. Therefore, we went to the hotel to hold a little siesta. At 4pm we headed towards the west side of the Rim where the sunset was beautiful and the sun no longer shone so hot. We took the Shuttlebus to the very end of the Rim and walked back a fair bit, the sun in our back, surrounded by beautiful nature, birds over us and we emerged in conversations about the future. Brilliant. Back in the Hotel we sat on the veranda, Zoë ordered her first Chili, drank some cocktails and watched the sun setting in the horizon. God how blessed are we....
