Ile d'Oleron- Pau- national parc of the Pyrenees- Saragosse- St. Mateu

Distance: Ile d'Oleron- Pau: 399km

                 Pau- St.Mateu: 432km

Good morning everyone!

Original plan : leaving at 7am latest to Bilbao and arrive at midday to have enough time to discover the city and see the Guggenheim museum (same as 2 years ago)

Reality: wake up at 7 am . Looking out of the window and realise it has been raining cats and dogs since the night before and find a good excuse to go to sleep again, wake up 3 hours later and accept the fact that my thoroughly planned itinerary needs a change.

So no Bilbao once again as weather announced in the whole Aquitaine area and northern Spain wasn't very inviting at all. So the only way to get out of this quiet quickly was to cut the way through the Pyrenees (wasn't a very good idea either) . I left late in the afternoon after lunch with the team and got wet after the first 100km... I mean like really wet so that even my feet were soaked in water and I am not even talking about the rest of my body. So it took finally nearly 7hours to do the 400km of route until I reached Pau about 10pm in the evening. The guy at the reception told me that of course the heaters aren't working as it is summer (summer is supposed to look different than this, doesn't it?) But I was lucky and the heater was working at least for some hours and I was putting all my clothes on top and around it hoping that it will be dry the next morning.. eventhough it's useless because 96 percent chance of rain  the next day does not give a single tiny chance that I am gonna stay dry during the drive. Which was the case!

So 2nd day from Pau through the pyrenees were actually even worse because I did not really calculate the criteria of temperature up in the mountains. And I don't even remember the last time I felt that cold. ( temperatures went down to 13 degrees with a sight under 20m ). As soon as I passed the national parc and the pass of nearly 1800m I went to a small restaurant on the Spanish French boarder having tapas and spending 30minutes in the bathroom at the hand dryer to get my stuff dry. I can't even describe how heavy I was shaking. Needed a couple of cups of tea and some hot meal to get me a little bit warmer. And then finally at the bottom on the other side (Spanish one) clouds were disappearing and I finally saw the sunlight coming hand in hand with high temperatures. So I made my way through Saragossa down to St. Mateu, mainly flat land , desert and pines. St. Mateu is a tiny village not very far from the beach already in the Castellon Valencia community and having mainly the Valencian  (subdialect of the Catalan language).

Hallo meine Lieben.
