Blog 15 / Von Argentinien zur Carretera Austral in Chile und weiter nach Süden bis Coyhaique / From Argentina to the Carretera Austral in Chile and further south to Coyhaique

Um weiteren Fahrten durch die langweilige argentinische Pampa zu vermeiden, geht’s zurück nach Chile. Highlight des Grenzübertritts ist die herausfallende Kühlschranktür bei der Kontrolle durch die chilenische Inspektorin, nicht untypisch für unseren Camper, der -wohl altersbedingt- für stetige „Unterhaltung“ sorgt. Leatherman und Klebeband leisten oft gute Dienste.

Die berühmte „Carretera Austral“ die Haupt- und einzige Strasse Chiles in den Süden war ein Prestigeprojekt von Präsident Pinochet, ist aber bis heute – trotz grosser Aktivitäten der derzeitigen Regierung – grossteils eine Schotterpiste sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität und endet zwar recht weit im Süden in Villa O’Higgins als Sackstrasse, bis heute kann Punta Arenas am Landweg nur über Argentinien erreicht werden.

Wir treffen auf die Ruta 7 „Carretera Austral“ im Örtchen Villa Lucia. Die Spuren des katastrophalen Eissturzes und Murabgangs von einem nahen Gletscher vor 3 Jahren sind heute noch über Kilometer unübersehbar. Fast das ganze Dorf wurde zerstört und etwa 30 Menschen fanden den Tod.

To avoid further boring driving trough the boring Argentinian’ Pampa we have to cross back to Chile. The highlight of this boarder-crossing is the falling off of the refrigerator’s door in the camper van – quite typically for the status of the equipment, a little worn out and always good for surprizes, so Leatherman and repair tape are helpful quite often.

The famous “Carretera Austral” is the main- and actually the only road to Chile’s south. Erection was a prestige project of former President Pinochet, but still today – beside strong activities by the actual government it is still mostly a gravel road of very different quality and ends up as a dead end street in Villa O’Higgens. Punte Arenas can be reached by road still via Argentina only.

We get to Ruta 7 “Carretera Austral” in the village Villa Lucia. The results of the catastrophic ice and mud slide from a nearby glacier three years ago still are visible over miles. The village was destroyed nearly completely and appx. 30 people were killed.
