From our beautiful but short two days on Caye Caulker, we took a minibus to Flores in Guatemala. Crossing the border costs like almost every time around 20$. As we were standing in line to get our stamps of the women who matched her eyeshadow with her green shirt, (is this a thing in latin america?) a group of young school children passed us.
Out of curiosity, I asked her if they were making a day trip from Belize to Guatemala. To our surprise, we found out that they cross the border every single day for school and also for lunch they go home (home = Guatemala) .
At first you're surprised and think of how much effort (4 border crossings a day) it must be, but then you realize that those are the few lucky kids, who get the chance to go to a school in Belize.
The small village Flores is located on an island and definitely worth a visit. We stayed in Hostel Yaxha, which is cheap and we'd recommend it any time, especially because my friend forgot her Ray Ban sun glasses there and the nice staff of this hostal send them to our hostal in Antigua.
Anyway, after a day of resting caused by me having a fever, we decided the next day to go to Tikal.
Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. We booked the sun downer tour because we couldn't convince ourself to wake up at 2am to see the sunrise in Tikal. As we arrived in front of the entrance, the tour guide told us that we have to pay an extra 20 QZ each to see the sun going down behind the famous temple. We thought that it was kind of stupid to pay- howj is he goning to stop us from going there -so we didn't.
Around 4 hours later we arrived at the famous temple IV where all the pictures are taken of (when you look up Tikal) and the guide said that every one who paid should go with him through/around the gate to arrive the other side of the temple.
I watched him give the security guide 20 QZ (of the 300 he just earned) and we just went with the flow of 16 people underneath the gutter to the other side to watch the sun go down. Thiswas 100% not legal but the tourists probably sleep better if they pay for it?
From Tikal, we traveled more down south to Lanquin and Semuc Champey.
But since this update has already been so long, Im going to write at least a second part about Guatemala.
Thank you for joining me and see you next time :)
