Südgeorgien (Teil 1) / South Georgia (Part 1)

Zwei Tage dauert es von den Falklandinseln nach Südgeorgien. Neptun meint es gut mit uns, und weiterhin schaukelt unser Schiff nur mäßig, und Seekrankheit ist ein Fremdwort. Unterwegs sehen wir einen ersten Eisberg und einige Wale ... alles nur Vorgeplänkel: Südgeorgien ist für uns das Hauptziel der Reise. Entsprechend ist die Enttäuschung groß, als wir an der zweitgrößten Königspinguin-Kolonie (in der Salisbury Plain) nicht anlanden dürfen - es liegen wegen Vogelgrippe wohl zu viele tote Tiere rum, so daß die Abstandsregeln nicht eingehalten werden können. Die stattdessen durchgeführte Zodiac-Strandfahrt ist nur ein magerer Ersatz.

Für den Nachmittag steht eine kleinere "KöPi"-Kolonie (in der Fortuna Bay) auf dem Programm , und das kann auch mal Vorteile haben. Auch hier liegen tote Tiere rum (überwiegend Seebären-Babies), aber die Tierdichte ist nicht ganz so hoch, und so können wir hier an Land. Mittenrein in die Kolonien - wie früher mal erlaubt - darf man nicht mehr, aber doch bis auf 10m ran, und die vom Meer kommenden oder zum Meer gehenden Tiere kommen auch noch viel näher vorbei - ein tolles Erlebnis, und so sind wir mit dem Tag dann doch wieder versöhnt.

Das Panorama war übrigens an beiden Plätzen spektakulär, vor allem bei Sonnenschein und blauem Himmel.

It takes two days from the Falklands to South Georgia, and Neptune is still a friend of us: Only moderate winds and gentle waves provide a smooth ride, and sea sickness is far away. We see our first iceberg if the trip, and a number of whales … but that's only the ouverture: South Georgia is for us the main target of this trip. Onfurtunately, it starts not so good: The 1st stop here - Salibury Plain, the 2nd-largest King penguin colony - cannot be visited, as - due to avian flu - there are too much dead animals to fulfill the distance requirements. We do a Zodiac ride in front of the beach of this place, but this is not at all similar to a visit on land.

In the afternoon, we are visiting Fortuna bay with a much smaller Colony of King Penguins, but in this case it has some Advantage: There are also some dead animals, but here, there is space enough to Keep the distance, and we are allowed to go on land. The rules of visit become more strict year by year, so it is no loger possible to go directly through the colony, we have to keep a distance of 10m , but individual penguins going in or out come much closer. In the end, we are satisfied with this day.

The Landscape - by the way - was fantastic on both places, snow, ice, glaciers against a blue and sunny sky ...
