Oaxaca is a pretty town located in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, a southern Mexican mountain range, at an altitude of 1500m. It is rich in pre-Columbian and colonial history, and well-known for its indigenous crafts and local cuisine. It overflows with numerous art galleries and museums as well as with churches from the early colonial times. I especially indulge in the various archeological sites around the town: the remains of the former Zapotec temples in Mitla, the ruins of an entire Zapotec town in Yagùl, and most popular, the ruins of Monte Albán. The Zapotec civilisation roughly existed from 500 BC (reaching their peak in 200 AD) until the decline of their empire in 900 AD.
Furthermore, I'm forced to practice my poor Spanish skills because nobody speaks English here. So far, I've successfully taken the local bus to the ruins, I've booked a shuttle to the airport in advance and brought my clothes to a public laundry place.
I'm sorry if I bored you with all the pictures of ancient ruins, but I just love them!
