BLOG 24 - 1 / Ship Cruise Tierra del Fuego y Cabo de Hornos (Part 1 from Punta Arenas to Pia Glacier)

Wir starten am Abend in Punta Arenas. Am nächsten Morgen landen wir mit den Zodiac Schlauchbooten in der Ainsworth- Bucht Wir unternehmen eine Wanderung in den subantarktischen, magellanschen Urwald – heute sehr feucht bis nass von oben und unten – aber mit interessanter Vegetation und schöner Landschaft. An Nachmittag fahren wir zum Tucker Island zu einer Kolonie von Magellanpinguinen – leider dürfen wir nicht an Land gehen, kommen den Tierchen aber trotzdem sehr nahe, da sie sich durch uns und die Boote überhaupt nicht gestört fühlen. Auf der Rückfahrt zum Schiff können wir noch Kormorane und Seelöwen sehen Bucht - Tucker-Eilande Am zweiten Tag kreuzen wir auf dem nordöstlichen Arm des Beagle-Kanals und fahren in die Pia-Bucht hinein, wo wir am gleichnamigen Gletscher an Land gehen – auf einem extra für uns ausgelegten Roten Teppich! Schon vom Strand und danach von einem Aussichtspunkt, den wir auf einer kurzen, aber steilen Wanderung erreichen, haben wir faszinierende Ausblicke auf Gletscher, Bucht und Bergwelt. Der strahlend blaue Himmel tut das seinige noch dazu.

Ship is leaving Punta Arenas in the evening. Next morning we are landing in Ainsworth Bay with the Zodiac boats. We are hiking through the Subantarctica Magellan Rain forest – today really rainy, but quite interesting vegetation and landscape. After lunch we are heading to the Tucker Island to see a colony of Magellan Penguins. Even though we are not allowed to step on land we get quite close to them since they are not shy at all. On the way back to our ship we can watch cormorants and sea lions. The next day we are cruising the North West arm of the Beagle Channel and enter into the Pia Bay to get to the Pia Glacier. For getting to the land they have provided a Red Carpet especially for us (all). Already there and later from a view which we reach after a short steep hike we have an amazing view to the glacier. The bay and the surrounding mountains. The clear blue sky fits perfect to that.
