I got my breakfast at the hostel and actually met Charlotte from badminton there as she was staying in the same hostel for a weekend in Dublin.
Afterwards I packed my bags and got on the dublin express to the airport. Check in took about an hour but I was early enough so no problem there.I got on my flight and was on the way to keflavik.
Landing there I grabbed my luggage which was hidden between the oversized bags again and made my way to the exit where I met Felix. The other volunteer also from the RGV organization.
We waited for a bit before the "SEED" project workers picked us up. With them was a girl volunteer named Fanny who was also from RGV and she had been staying here for a while already.
She told us that whatever we thought the project was going to be like, it was wrong. The project camps are organized by SEED and take between 9-10 days. Usually people come here for these camps and then leave again.
Only the SEED workers stay here for months or even a year, also as volunteers. For some reason and without the SEED people even knowing about it, RGV started sending volunteers without any real purpose.
We take part in the camps but aren't really part of the camps since we just stay here before and after the camps. We are also not part of SEED since they do completly different jobs like organizing and guiding the camps or working at the red cross shop.
We all live in the same house though.
Also the camps aren't "camps" we stay in this house and are making daily excursions to musuems, power plants, we do workshops on photography for some reason and some environment workshops.
But nothing has to do with nature conservation, planting trees, building hiking trails or really working at all. Except for maybe picking up trash in the city. So basically everything that was described in the project by RGV was wrong.
We are a bit in between normal camp participants and Seeds here. But Fanny said that we were going to have a good time after we get used to it. She was part of the first RGV volunteers that arrived here and had a lor more to deal with. Like not really having a room or food since nobody usually stayed between the 9-10 day camps.
We will probably just focus on what she tells us. Right now I am quite uncertain how this is going to turn out. I am thankful that I am only staying for a month. Since the camps are always kind of the same, Fanny said she visited the museum about 5times already.
Also there is one bathroom and we are 10 people.
After getting to know some of the Seed workers me and felix headed out to explore the city. We found 2 boardgame shops were you can just come and play some boardgames, so that's nice.
And the city itself is also very beautiful, much nicer than the cities in Ireland I have to say. More green and also less trash.
After getting lost for a bit we found our way back to the house. The other people from the current camp have their final day today and leave early in the morning.
Since the next camp starts on tuesday evening me and felix are helping the SEED workers in the red cross clothes shop for the next two days.
Not really what I signed up for but it is only for 2days from 10:00 to 14:00. So I guess that's fine.
Let's hope the camp will be fun.
