A little bit off the actual transibirian trail, Tomsk is a nice university city that is, apart from the university's botanical gardens, also known for its wooden architecture houses, although there are not as many left as one might think. Interesting: the Memorial museum in the basement of a former NKVD/KGB building respectively prison.
