Greece's public transport

Comfortably I started into the morning. The 3 girls had already flown out early. So I could enjoy the room for myself. Smile

First I had to find out about the bus system here in Chania. Well, I thought that it will not be too easy and transparent. We Swiss are just already mega spoiled. Here most of the bus stops don't even have a timetable. And there is also no overview of which bus stops where. So on the off chance, just stand at the stop and wait....

I also did some research about Santorini. According to the guidebook, a day trip should cost about 100 euros. Pha! Since it is now high season, it costs 160 euros or more. Since I have now only 1 week rented a car, I invest the money in a day trip to the beautiful island of Santorini. Juhui. Now I just have to book the ticket online. But I can do that in the next few days. The only thing that bothers me is that I have to drive to Heraklion. This is over 2 hours. Departure of the ferry boat is 9 o'clock and you have to be there 1 hour before. Means 5:30 departure, then I have to find my way, park, go buy a ticket. Whew, that's a bit inconvenient. But what the heck. Santorini is just soooo beautiful. I have to go through it now! (PS: also here; sometimes it comes differently...)

So, now out of the sleeping cabin and into the sun. According to our reception, the bus stop in front of the hotel is actually served and exactly there I wait for the bus. After 20 minutes it actually comes. The bus driver explains to me that I have to go to the end station (in the middle of the city). Because there is the 'KTEL' bus company, which operates the long-distance lines. There I can buy a ticket to 'Rethymno'. No sooner said than done. The ticket cost 1.50 Euro and the one to Rethymno, 1.5 hours drive away, 12.60 Euro (there and back!). Unfortunately, I had missed the 11.30 bus by 5 minutes. Therefore I had now 1 hour time in Chania Town. During the outward journey I saw earlier a travel agency, which offers tours to Santorini! .....and already my plan to book the trip to Santorini in the next few days, done. And how! Because, I am picked up directly at the hostel (at 5:50 am) and in the evening then also brought back here. Pha! So everything is done. Perfect! Santorini I come on Thursday! I am really looking forward to it. Including the trip on one of these giant hummers. When we were on vacation in Santorini, we could hear the speedboats from afar (before we saw them)! It's incredible, the amount of water that is displaced by the monster engines. Accordingly, the noise is also.... I don't want to know what it sounds like to the sea creatures. Hmmmm.

The ride to Rethymno was pleasant. In the air-conditioned coach I sat in front and thus had everything in view. The place is very beautiful. Narrow streets, lots of taverns in the shade of the old house facades or the huge bougainvillea bushes. There are also many stores with the typical Cretan leather goods. Also jewelry in abundance. Most of it is nothing special. Only rarely are there really cool stores with unique pieces from local artists and not the mass-produced goods.

I discovered a really great ceramics store by the stairway to the fortress. Gifts for those at home are already partly bought. Smile.

The fortress is huge and apparently it was originally planned to move the village up here. But the inhabitants of Rethymno at that time did not want this and therefore there are not many buildings there. But the wall alone is impressive. Not to mention the view. Even if today again the wind has made the heat a little more bearable, it is still incredibly hot 34 degrees. Drinking is announced and in between pause at an airy place and let cool down. My circulation sleeps in between somersaults; therefore always siga siga!

A great trip, which has found a great conclusion with the return trip to Chania. Shortly in the hostel and then off to the tavern. Right next to it still briefly post the first postcards. Although, I'm not sure if the cards will ever reach Switzerland. The will is at least there. Hihi.

Just now a new face enters the room. The girl is from Israel and has been traveling through Greece for 1 month. Now she has moved up her flight by one week because Israel wants to put Greece on the risk list. The Ukrainian girl will leave tomorrow very early and therefore is now with the Irish girl in the exit. Their goal for tonight is to get drunk. Then I'm curious when the two come into the room and one of them must then climb the ladder to the upper floor. Smile
