Sado - Bike festival and some small activities

Veröffentlicht: 08.06.2023

In the following days, we engaged in some smaller activities, so I'll combine them here. On Friday, Ayuna shows us how a traditional tea ceremony is conducted in Japan. Unfortunately, we don't have all the tools at hand, but everything goes smoothly nonetheless, and the matcha tastes great as always. In the afternoon, we make paper out of old milk cartons, mixing it with colorful flowers. However, it takes at least overnight to dry, so we have the rest of the afternoon to relax.
On Saturday, we clean up our rooms and common areas again and do some tidying. We have some time before our departure in the afternoon, so we retrieve our homemade paper to fold origami from it. It actually works better than expected. After lunch, we hop in the car and head to a cycling event. Every year, there's a bicycle race held there where all participants cycle around the entire island. While chatting with a woman who is also participating the next day, we learn that it takes about 12 hours to circumnavigate the island. Today, we are here to help the Sado Bamboo Club set up bamboo bike stands. They are relatively easy to build, requiring only a few bamboo stalks and some rope. The head of the Bamboo Club is a Brazilian who has been living in Sado for 20 years, and we have a chat with him after we finish our work.
The next day, we have another day off, and we take the opportunity to visit the hot springs in Hamochi. Onsen is a public bathhouse with a hot spring, and it's truly one of the best things you should definitely experience when in Japan. Additionally, we bought ingredients for Japanese curry. Traditionally, it's made with potatoes, carrots, and meat. However, we got a bit carried away with the vegetables and ended up having potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, kabocha squash, asparagus, mushrooms, and tomatoes. But it turned out to be incredibly delicious, and I'll definitely cook it the same way when I'm back home.
