BLOG 12: Eilan Donan Castle - Glencoe - Blackford

Bald nachdem wir die Brücke von Skye zum Festland überquert haben, taucht schon die bekannte Ansicht des Eilan Donan Castle vor uns auf. Dieses Schloss ist wohl eines der bekanntesten in Schottland und kommt in vielen Filme, so auch im „Highlander“ vor. Diese Bekanntheit merkt man auch am gewaltigen Besucherstrom. Der Parkplatzwächter, der uns, wahrscheinlich weil wir so nette Österreicher sind, doch noch zu einem Parkplatz verhilft, erzählt, dass heuer der Ansturm schon im April begonnen hat, nicht wie früher ab Ende Juni… Da wir heute noch einige Meilen zu fahren haben, begnügen wir uns mit der Aussenansicht des Castles. Auf recht unterschiedlich breiten Strassen, vorbei an so manchem Loch, erreichen wir gegen Abend den Campingplatz von Glen Nevis bei Fort William. Das wunderschöne Wetter erlaubt das Relaxen im Freien mit Blick auf die Vorberge des Ben Nevis.

Am nächsten Morgen geht es weiter über Täler und Berge Richtung Osten. Im berühmten Glencoe Tal machen wir Stopp für eine kleine Wanderung auf und um den „An Torr“ Hügel. Der anfänglich gemütliche-ebene Weg entpuppt sich bald als ganz schön schweißtreibendes Auf und Ab, es ist aber schön, durch diesen naturbelassenen Wald zu wandern. In dieser Gegend wurden auch einige Episoden der Harry Potter Filme gedreht, so war bis vor ein paar Jahren die Filmkulisse von „Hagrid’s Hut“ ein Anziehungspunkt für die Harry Potter Jünger – mittlerweile wurde diese allerdings abgerissen… Nach der Wanderung hätten wir uns sehr gerne im bekannten Clachaig Inn etwas gestärkt, aber da wir außerhalb der streng eingehaltenen offiziellen Essenszeiten ankommen, wird uns nur ein eher zwielichtig aussehender Käsekuchen angeboten, auf den wir gerne verzichten. Zur Ehrenrettung des Lokals ist aber anzuführen, dass wir zum ersten Mal in Schottland einen wirklich guten Espresso bzw. Café Latte bekommen.

Weiters geht’s mit dem Auto – teilweise in Kolonnenfahrt und immer wieder von Baustellenampeln gestoppt. Zwischendurch gibt es auch immer wieder schöne Ausblicke in die Landschaft.

Am späten Nachmittag erreichen wir Blackford, wo wir am folgenden Tag die 151. Blackford Highland Games besuchen wollen. Diese Games sind keine der großen Events, aber dafür sehr früh im Jahr veranstaltet und noch dazu einigermaßen mit unserer Route kompatibel. Am Gelände herrscht noch emsiges Aufbauen, aber wir bekommen unseren Übernachtungsplatz in einer Ecke der Wiese zugewiesen, dazu mussten wir schon vor ein paar Monaten eine Application an den General Secretary der Games richten, um die Genehmigung dafür zu erhalten. Außer uns sind vor allem deutsche Camper da, dazu nur ein Franzose und ein Brite. Wir werden schon mit Dudelsackmusik empfangen – das gibt schon einen Vorgeschmack auf den folgenden Tag.

Soon after crossing the bridge from Skye to the mainland, the familiar view of Eilan Donan Castle appears before us. This castle is probably one of the most famous in Scotland and appears in many films, including "Highlander". This popularity is also noticeable in the huge stream of visitors. The car park attendant, who helps us to find a parking space, probably because we are such nice Austrians, tells us that this year the rush has started in April already, not at the end of June like in the past years... Since we still have a few miles to drive today, we are satisfied with the outside view of the castle. On roads of varying widths, past many lochs, we reach the Glen Nevis campsite near Fort William in the evening. The beautiful weather allows for outdoor relaxation with a view of the Ben Nevis .

The next morning we continue east across valleys and mountains. In the famous Glencoe Valley we stop for a short hike up and around “An Torr” Hill. The initially comfortable, level path soon turns out to be quite a sweaty up and down, but it is nice to hike through this natural forest. Some episodes of the Harry Potter films were also shot in this area, so until a few years ago the film set of "Hagrid's Hut" was an attraction for the Harry Potter fans - meanwhile, however, it has been demolished... After the hike, we would very much like to get some food the well-known Clachaig Inn, but since we arrive outside the strictly enforced official mealtimes we are only offered a rather strange looking cheesecake, which we happily passed up. To save the honor of the restaurant it should be mentioned that we get a really good espresso and café latte for the first time in Scotland.

We continue by car – sometimes driving in convoys and repeatedly stopped by construction site traffic lights. In between there are always beautiful views of the landscape.

In the late afternoon we reach Blackford, where we want to visit the 151st Blackford Highland Games the following day. These games are not one of the big events, but they are held very early in the year and the location is reasonably compatible with our route. There is still a lot of construction going on at the site, but we are assigned our place to stay in a corner of the meadow. A few months ago, we had to send an application to the General Secretary of the Games to get approval for this. Apart from us, there are mainly German campers, plus only one Frenchman and one Brit. We are greeted with bagpipe music - that gives a taste of the following day.
