Die Stadt ist benannt nach dem spanischen Eroberer Pedro de Valdivia, der diese auch in 1552 gegründet hat.

In Valdivia gibt es sehr wenige alte Gebäude – das Erdbeben ( Stärke 9,5 ) und der nachfolgende Tsunami von 1960 haben die Stadt nicht nur teilweise bis zu 3 m absacken lassen, sondern es waren auch mehr als 80 % der Gebäude zerstört.

Heute bietet vor allem der Fisch- und Gemüsemarkt samt den anliegenden „Tschecherln“ ein buntes und lebhaftes, auch für den Geruch buntes Bild.

Nach ausgiebigem Besuch dort fahren wir mit der „Neptuno“ hinaus zu den vorgelagerten Inseln, auf denen Ruinen der einstmals spanischen Festungen zu sehen sind.

In der zweiten besuchten Festung Corral sehen wir ein gar „schröcklisches Spektakulum“, die Eroberung der Festung durch chilenische Truppen und die schmachvolle Niederlage der Spanier sehr patriotisch dargestellt. VIVA LA PATRIA hören wir circa 500 mal…(aber nur von den Darstellern, nicht vom chilenischen Publikum).

City got it’s name after the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia who has founded the city in 1552.

There are not many old buildings in Valdivia, 1960 earthquake and following tsunami not only let the city get down by 3 meters – also more than 80 % of the buildings were destroyed.

Today especially the fish and vegetable market are busy and colorful and smelly.. Neighboring pbs are also not bad…

After intense visit here, we took the “Neptuno” for a cruise to the outlying islands and the remainings of Spanish fortresses.

In the second visited fortress Corral we can see a colorful and patriotic show of the conquest of the fortress by Chilean troops and the humiliating defeat of the Spanish losers. VIVA LA PATRIA yelling we could hear 500 times – but by the actors only, not by the Chilean spectators…
