BLOG 10 - Alaska HWY von Watson Lake nach Haines Junction

Auf dem Alaska Highway fahren wir zunächst nach Osten – die „falsche Richtung“. Unser Ziel ist Watson Lake, wo wir tanken und einkaufen können. Der Liter Benzin kostet in Kanada mittlerweile auch ca. 1,50 bis 1,65 EUR, was beim Verbrauch unseres Trucks von 20 bis 23 Liter auf 100 km ganz schön herb ist.

In Watson Lake gibt’s es auch den berühmtem „Schilderwald“ wo über die letzten Jahrzehnte Reisende aus allen Ländern ihre – teilweise speziell dafür angefertigten oder auch geklauten – Tafeln anschrauben.

Jetzt geht es nach Westen – es warten etwa 700 km bis Haines Junction auf uns, ein paar kleinere Abweichungen vom Alaska Highway inbegriffen.

Wir nehmen diese Strecke nicht in einem Stück, selten fahren wir mehr als 300 km am Tag, hier finden wir einen schönen Übernachtungsplatz auf einem Yukon Government Campground an einem kleinen See, diese Plätze bieten zwar wenig Ausstattung (wir haben aber eigentlich alles notwendige an Bord unseres Campers), aber immer viel Platz, idyllische Lage und kostenloses Feuerholz für eine Übernachtungsgebühr von ca. 15 EUR, die man in einem Kuvert in eine Box einwerfen muss.

Erwähnenswert ist die Fahrt an und über den Teslin Lake, dieser wunderschöne See ist fast 150 km lang.

Wie bei unserer ersten Yukon & Alaska Reise vor 6 Jahren besuchen wir Carcross (eigentlich Caribou Crossing) Caribous sehen wir hier zwar keine, aber dafür zwei Füchse auf der Strasse. Carcross ist der heutige Endpunkt der White Pass & Yukon Railroad – heutzutage nur mehr für Touristen unterwegs. Leider fahren die Züge in 2022 (wegen der kanadischen Einreisebedingungen) nur das kurze Stück vom (US-amerikanischen) Skagway bis zum White Pass. Unsere geplante Fahrt von Skagway nach Carcross muss daher leider entfallen. Das neue Stammeszentrum der Tagish First Nation ist noch nicht völlig in Betrieb, aber auch von außen sehenswert.

Gleich nach Carcross kommt man an der „Kleinsten Wüste der Welt“ der Carcross Desert und dem schönen Emerald Lake vorbei.

Whitehorse bypassen wir jetzt – wir kommen nochmal vorbei und es geht nach Haines Junction – dem „Gateway zum Kluane“. Der Ort bietet nur ein paar, eher kuriose Sehenswürdigkeiten, so das „Yukon Monument“ – von den Locals „The Muffin“ genannt, oder die katholische Kirche „Our Lady of the Way“, die in den 50-er Jahren von einem holländischen Priester aus einer amerikanischen Werkstätte aus der Zeit des Baus des Alaska Highway gestaltet wurde.

Wir sind hier wegen des Mini-Flughafens, der für uns das Gateway zum Kluane Icefield sein wird.

On the Alaska Highway we drive east first– the “wrong direction”. Our destination is Watson Lake, where we can refuel and shop. A liter of petrol in Canada now also costs around EUR 1.50 to 1.65, which is pretty harsh considering our truck's consumption of 20 to 23 liters per 100 km. In Watson Lake there is also the famous "sign forest" where travelers from all countries have screwed on their boards - some of which were specially made for this purpose or even stolen - over the last few decades.

Now we head west - about 700 km to Haines Junction, including a few minor deviations from the Alaska Highway. We don't take this route in one go, we rarely drive more than 300 km a day, here we find a nice place to stay at a Yukon Government Campground by a small lake, these places offer little equipment (but we actually have everything we need on board of our camper), but always plenty of space, idyllic location and free firewood for an overnight fee of approx. 15 EUR, which you have to put in an envelope in a box.

Worth mentioning is the drive along and over Teslin Lake, this beautiful lake is almost 150 km long.

As on our first Yukon & Alaska trip 6 years ago, we visit Carcross (actually Caribou Crossing). We don't see any caribous here, but we do see two foxes on the road. Carcross is the current terminus of the White Pass & Yukon Railroad - nowadays only for tourists. Unfortunately, in 2022 (due to Canadian immigration requirements) trains will only run the short distance from (US) Skagway to White Pass. Unfortunately, our planned trip from Skagway to Carcross has to be cancelled therefore.

The new tribal center of the Tagish First Nation is not yet fully operational, but is worth seeing from the outside. Immediately after Carcross you will pass the "Smallest Desert in the World" of the Carcross Desert and the beautiful Emerald Lake.

We bypass Whitehorse now - we'll pass by again and we'll go to Haines Junction - the "Gateway to Kluane". The place offers only a few, rather curious sights, such as the "Yukon Monument" - called "The Muffin" by the locals, or the Catholic Church "Our Lady of the Way", which was built in the 50s by a Dutch priest from an American workshop from the time the Alaska Highway was built.

We are here because of the mini airport that will be our gateway to the Kluane Icefield.
