Warschau - der Anfang vom Ende

Von Riga nach Warschau mit dem Nachtbus in 13 Stunden und wir sind schon in der letzten Stadt dieser unglaublichen 20 tägigen Reise angekommen...! Es gibt im Baltikum (wie schon beim letzten Blogbeitrag erwähnt) keine Zugverbindungen zwischen diesen Städten. Wir sind komplett durch Litauen gefahren und sogar einmal ausgestiegen, um litauischen Boden zu berühren. Ob es nun zählt, dass wir mal in Litauen waren und dieses Land auf der Karte freirubbeln dürfen? ;)

Frühmorgens um 6 Uhr nach nur wenig Schlaf sind wir endlich in Warschau ausgestiegen. Der Bahnhof ist in einem sehr modernen Viertel mit vielen Hochhäusern, u.a. dem Kulturpalast - ein Wahrzeichen Warschaus gelegen. Wir hatten eine so sehr moderne Seite gar nicht von Warschau erwartet.

Unsere Unterkunft, das Oki Doki City Hostel liegt in 15 Minuten fußläufig vom Bahnhof entfernt. Es wirkte auf uns etwas chaotisch, aber das Zimmer war wirklich sehr ordentlich und sauber. Außerdem veranstaltet das Hostel mehrmals in der Woche Veranstaltungen, an denen man kostenlos teilnehmen kann. Wir hätten an dem Abend beispielsweise Karaoke singen können. Eigentlich ist das eine wirklich gute Sache vom Hostel!

Auch in Warschau haben wir unsere Stadterkundungen mit einer Free Walking Tour begonnen. Diese hat sich hauptsächlich auf die Old Town (und ein wenig New Town) konzentriert. Die Tour war insgesamt sehr gelungen und interessant. Wir haben in deren Verlauf sogar einen typisch polnischem Tanz - Polonez gelernt.

Nach der Free Walking Tour haben wir in einem kleinen Lokal in der New Town sehr lecker italienisch gegessen. Vor allem die Suppen waren genial!
Danach sind wir nochmal ein wenig durch die Altstadt spaziert und haben das jüdische Viertel besichtigt. Warschau war der Schauplatz vieler geschichtsträchtigen Ereignisse, wobei u.a. die jüdische Bevölkerung auch eine große Rolle gespielt hat. Es gibt zahlreiche interessante geschichtliche (oder auch andere) Museen, wofür wir jedoch keine Zeit hatten.

An unserem allerletzten Abend sind wir im sehr empfehlenswerten Lokal "Aioli" in Hostelnähe schön essen gegangen. Anschließend haben wir den Abend noch bei einem Apple Cider bei McDonalds ausklingen lassen. Der Aufenthaltsraum bei McDonalds war nämlich gemütlicher als in unserem Hostel (wenn man diesen dort überhaupt so bezeichnen kann...)

Warschau ist eine unglaublich interessante Stadt mit viel Geschichte, wofür man sich definitiv mehr Zeit, wir denken 3 bis 4 Tage Zeit, nehmen sollte. Wir jedenfalls werden definitiv nochmal zurückkommen!

Sooo, das war dann auch schon die letzte Stadt unserer wunderbaren Interrail 2.0 Reise. Es war wieder mal eine tolle Zeit und wir werden sie vermissen!! <3

Our 20 days journey is coming to an end! From Denmark we travelled through amazing Scandinavian and Baltic countries to finally reach our last destination: Warsaw.

It took us 13 hours by bus from Riga to arrive in the Polish capital. But as we have travelled over night, we didn't miss a day!

Due to our early arrival the city welcomed us with empty streets and a beautiful morning sun. Our hostel was located just a 15 minute walk from the central station where you'll find Warsaw's modern part with all of it's skyscrapers as well as the Palace of Culture and Science. 

The hostel's location couldn't have been better, but other than that we weren't really happy about its interior and its not so friendly staff. Still it's a very decent price for such a central location, therefore, the Okidoki city hostel can certainly be considered as a possible accomodation.

Still we don't want to talk about accomodation but about Warsaw itself. It has so much to offer that one day is definitely not enough!

During our single day in the city we mainly focused on the old town and its surroundings. Of course we started sightseeing by attenting the Old Town Free Walking Tour. What else in our case?:)

The Tour was lead by a young polish man who made the tour interesting while also entertaining. One time he made us all dance the Polish traditional dance Polonez. It is supposed to look like an elegant polonaise, in our case it looked more like an awkward walk. Still it was fun!

During the Old Town Tour we learnt more about Warsaw's complete reconstruction of its old town. The old town was fully destroyed during WW2. Anyhow what we get to see today is rebuilt under consideration of it's historic shapes and buildings.

The most visited and famous sights in Old Town include Sigismund's column, the Royal Castle and the Old Town Market Place with it's landmark the mermaid. On Wednesdays the entry to the Royal Castle is free, so we took the opportunity for a visit inside. It is certainly interesting!

The other half of the day we explored Lazienki Park and Palace as well as Judicial, Jewish landmarks. If you have one or two days more, definitely make use of all the historic sites and museums that Warsaw has to offer. We regretted not having enough time in this city, but for us it is a reason to come back. And also in general we liked the city a lot, which shines with it's modern part and it's old part at the same time.

In Warsaw we could end our amazing journey in the right atmosphere. We had a nice dinner at a place called Aïoli, in the end it became our favourite restaurant of the entire journey!
