Albania is one of the Balkans’ most rewarding destinations for travelers seeking a mix of stunning coastline, rugged mountains, rich history, and excellent value. What makes it especially appealing is how much variety is packed into a relatively small country: you can wander Ottoman-era towns such as Berat and Gjirokaster, relax along the turquoise beaches of the Albanian Riviera, and explore dramatic alpine scenery in the north, all within a single trip. The country still feels less crowded than many of its Mediterranean neighbors, giving visitors a more local, authentic experience.
Key highlights include the Riviera’s beach towns like Ksamil, Dhermi, and Himare, the lively capital Tirana with its colorful streets and cafe culture, and UNESCO-listed heritage sites that reveal Albania’s layered past. Travelers can hike in the Accursed Mountains around Theth and Valbona, visit ancient ruins such as Butrint, or enjoy fresh seafood and hearty regional dishes at very reasonable prices. For practical travel, summer is ideal for the coast but can be busy, while spring and early autumn are great for combining beaches, cities, and hiking with milder temperatures. Roads in mountain areas can be slow and winding, so allow extra travel time, and carrying some cash is useful since card acceptance is not universal outside main tourist centers.
The best time to visit Albania is from May to September, when travel interest is highest and conditions are best for enjoying the coast, historic towns, and mountain scenery. May, July, and September stand out especially, offering a strong mix of pleasant weather, active tourism infrastructure, and fewer extremes than the peak summer rush.
Well, here we are again! Once again, it was time to say goodbye to our most beautiful accommodation so far – with a tear in our eye and the scent of fresh morning coffee in our...

In Shkoder, the past few days have been calmer after the long nights in Tirana. From there, the journey began to the 'Hike' Valbona to Theth. More on that in the next blog post.
