Tag 19: Cape Reinga

Heute geht’s mit Kevin, unserem Busfahrer, zum Cape Reinga. Erster Stopp ist der Puketi Kauri Forest. Hier haben wir 15 Minuten Zeit um durch den Wald zu laufen. Der 20.000 ha grosse Puketi-Kauri-Wald besitzt eine vielfältige Flora und Fauna. Am Manginangina-Wanderpfad wachsen beeindruckende, über 1000 Jahre alte Kauri-Bäume. Nächster Stopp ist Taipa für den Morgentee. Der polynesische Seefahrer Kupe soll der Sage nach hier gelandet sein, als er den Fisch von Maui (Nordinsel) um 950 n. Chr. entdeckte. Daran erinnert eine Skulptur an der Flussbrücke. In dem Moment in dem wir von Taipa abfahren fängt an zu regnen. Er dauert jedoch nicht all zu lang. Die Dame die vor mir im Bus sitzt strickt um sich die Zeit zu vertreiben. In Neuseeland leben ca. 4.7 Millionen Menschen und 40 Millionen Schafe.

Der Stopp für das Mittagessen befindet sich in Houhora. Ein wirklich schöner Ort. Es gibt Fish and Chips. Dies war im Preis inbegriffen. Danach geht’s in die Dünen wo wir mit Boards über den Sand surfen. Dann ist es endlich so weit und Cape Reinga ist zu erblicken. Ich bin geflasht. Es ist wirklich wunderschön hier und das Wetter könnte fast nicht besser sein. Das Kap ist der nördlichste Punkt Neuseelands. Hier, wo die Tasmanische See und der Pazifik zusammentreffen, verlassen die Seelen der verstorbenen Māori die Erde. Der Leuchtturm blinkt alle 26 Sekunden und kann noch aus ca. 50 km Entfernung wahrgenommen werden.

Danach geht’s ab zum Ninety Mile Beach. Die weiten Sandstrände dieser Wüstenküste verbergen viele Legenden, mystische Geschichten, historische Fakten und Sehenswürdigkeiten. Der Strand ist eigentlich nur ca. 55 Meilen lang.

Auf einmal nimmt die Frau vor mir Nadel und Faden aus ihrer Tasche und beginnt zu nähen. Sie ist wirklich auf alles vorbereitet.

Ursprünglich war es geplant, dass ich einen Panoramaflug über Cape Reinga und den Ninety Mile Beach mache. Dies wurde jedoch abgesagt weil ich die einzige Person war die den Flug gebucht hat. Jedoch wie ich den heutigen Tag erlebe denke ich nicht, dass der Flug besser wäre. Dieser Tag ist ein voller Erfolg.

Today we’re going to Cape Reinga with Kevin, our bus driver. First stop is the Puketi Kauri Forest. Here we have 15 minutes to walk through the forest. The 20‘000 ha big forest has a versatile flora and fauna. On the Manginangina-hiking-path, impressive and more than 1’000 years old Kauri trees are growing. Next stop is Taipa for the morning tea. Sagas are telling that the Polynesian seafarer Kupe stranded here as he discovered the fish of Maui (North Island) around 950 after Christ. A sculpture at the river bridge remembers that event. As we leave Taipa, it’s starting to rain. Luckily the rain doesn’t last long. The lady sitting in front of me in the coach is knitting to pass the time. New Zealand has around 4.7 million inhabitants and 40 million sheep.

The stop for the lunch is located in Houhora. A really beautiful place. Fish and chips is being served. That was included in the price. After that we are heading to the dunes where we get a board to surf down the hills. Then the time has finally come and we are able to see Cape Reinga. I am overwhelmed. It truly is beautiful here and the weather almost couldn’t be better. The Cape is the most Northern point of New Zealand. Here, where the Tasmanian lake ans Pacific ocean collide, the souls of the Māori that passed away are leaving the earth. The lighthouse flashes every 26 seconds and is even visible from 50 kilometers away.

Afterwards we’re going to the Ninety Mile Beach. The wide sand beaches of this desert coast is hiding multiple legends, mythical stories, historical facts and places of interest. In fact the beach isn’t 90 miles long. It measures only about 55 miles.

All of the sudden the lady in front of me takes needle and thread out of her bag. She really is prepared for anything.

Originally the plan was that I would do a panorama flight over Cape Reinga and the Ninety Mile Beach. But unfortunately it got cancelled because I was the only person that booked it. But on the other hand, as I am experiencing the day I don’t think that the flight would have been better though. The day is definitely a success.
