Suffering from Tunnel Vision

Veröffentlicht: 09.11.2022

Finally, we could use the solar shower again in the morning at the campground! Well, it’s not so easy to find something to attach it too, as trees are very scarce in the desert. So, we really enjoyed taking the shower, since it has been some days…

However, after that, we climbed Tunnel Vision 5.7+ at Red Rock. We didn’t find the correct approach path at first, so we had to bushwhack a bit, which wasn’t really pleasant because of all the cactuses and stinging plants. But it was worth it because the route was awesome! It almost felt like climbing in the Elbsandstein at home, as the rock looked similar with its light beige colour and dark patina. The crux is a narrow, strenuous chimney, which was the part to “suffer”. To cap it all, while Philipp was leading, his chalk bag fell down into the even narrower crevasse at the back of the chimney. So, I tried my best to recover it. I even had to take my helmet off so that my head fit into the crevasse, and with the nut tool as an “arm extension”, I finally reached it. Well, in the end we squeezed through and made our way to the actual “tunnel vision” in pitch 5, where a huge plate forms a dark chimney. At the last pitch, we did a variation to take the more direct line via the last meters of the route Eigerwand with a fun crack to the top. On the hike back to the car, we realized we finally arrived in the desert, as there were lots of cool tree-like cactuses and big mother-in-law’s cushion cactuses (of course, I’d never wish my mother-in-law to sit on that, haha).
