BLOG 3: Orchha

Auf dem Weg von Gwalior nach Kajuraho machen wir ein Zwischenstopp in ORCHHA:

Orchha ist ein kleines Dorf mit heute nur noch etwa 12.000 Einwohnern im Tikamgarh-Distrikt von Madhya Pradesh. Orchha war von 1531 bis zur Unabhängigkeit Indiens die Hauptstadt des Königreichs Orchha und Bundelkhand.

Orchha Fort – Die Hauptattraktion von Orchha ist der Orchha Fort Complex, der auf einer Insel am Fluss Betwa liegt. Innerhalb des Komplexes befinden sich mehrere Paläste. Anlässlich des Besuchs des Mogulkaisers wurde Jahangir Mahal zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts von Bir Singh Deo erbaut. Es ist auf der einen Seite für seine filigrane Arbeit bekannt und auf der anderen Seite für seine Ausgewogenheit mit starkem Mauerwerk. Raja Mahal aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, der zweite Palast in diesem Festungskomplex, ist bekannt für seine Wandgemälde mit religiösen Themen.

Chhatris (Kenotaphe) – Dies sind die Kenotaphe der ehemaligen Herrscher von Orchha aus dem Bundela-Clan. Davon gibt es 14 aus dem 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert. Die Größe jedes einzelnen entspricht der Dauer der Herrschaft des Herrschers.

Chaturbhuj-Tempel – Der Chaturbhuj-Tempel liegt direkt gegenüber dem Raja Mahal und ist eine der berühmtesten Attraktionen der Stadt Orchha. Der Tempel ist der vierarmigen Gottheit Chaturbhuj gewidmet (was wörtlich „vier Arme“ bedeutet) und bietet im Inneren viel Licht und Platz, was für einen Hindu-Tempel ungewöhnlich ist. Maharani Ganesh Kunwart (die Frau des Herrschers von Orchha) und Raja Madhukar bauten diesen Tempel im 16. Jahrhundert, um insbesondere das Idol von Lord Rama zu beherbergen.

On the way from Gwalior to Kajuraho we make a stopover in ORCHHA:

Orchha is a small village with today only around 12.000 inhabitants in the Tikamgarh District of Madhya Pradesh. Orchha was capital of the Kingdom of Orchha and Bundelkhand from 1531 to independence of India.

Orchha Fort - The main attraction of Orchha is the Orchha Fort Complex, located on an island, on River Betwa. several palaces are located within the complex. To mark the visit of Mughal Emperor, Jahangir Mahal was built by Bir Singh Deo, in the early part of the 17th century. It is known for its delicate work on one side and balanced with strong masonry on the other. Raja Mahal from 16th century, the second palace in this fort complex is well known for its murals, depicting religious themes.

Chhatris (Cenotaphs) – This are the cenotaphs of the erstwhile rulers of Orchha from the Bundela Clan. There are 14 of them from the 16th to the 18th century. The size of each is corresponding to the length of the reign of the ruler.

Chaturbhuj Temple - Situated right opposite the Raja Mahal, Chaturbhuj Temple is one of the famous attractions of Orchha city. Dedicated to the four-armed deity, Chaturbhuj (which literally means four-arms), the temple has plenty of light and space inside, a feature unusual for a Hindu temple. Maharani Ganesh Kunwart (the wife of Orchha's ruler) and Raja Madhukar constructed this temple, to especially house the idol of Lord Rama in 16th century.
