25. Tag - day 25 (for english scroll down

Zoë's Geburtstag! Für mich begann er um 5 Uhr morgens.... ich schlich mich aus dem Zimmer und fuhr in Saveway der schon offen hatte! Da kaufte ich alles was nach Geburtstag aussah. Ballone, Teetasse, viele Süssigkeiten, einen Oreo Geburtstagskuchen etc. Auch wollte ich Zoë ein Alkopop kaufen da sie jetzt (in der Schweiz) sowas trinken darf. Aber hier in Arizona darf man keinen Alkohol zwischen 2 und 6Uhr morgens kaufen...Zurück dekorierte  ich das Zimmer so gut es ging, stellte die Karte und den Gutschein (ein Swisscom Abo) dazu und legte mich wieder hin. Ihr Tag began schon mal gut. Dann telefonierte sie mit Joel, weinte vor Freude ab dem wunderschönen Video den er für sie gemacht hatte und ich wartete brav unten beim Garten... In der Ruhe begleiteten mich ein Kaninchen und eine Eidechse in totaler Zufriedenheit. Irgendwann gings dann ab nach Monument valley. Eine wiederum faszinierende Landschaft zog an uns vorbei - und Zoë schlief... Irgendwann in der Wüste kamen wir zu einer Tankstelle wo wir tankten und da war auch noch ein Flohmarkt - weit und breit sonst gar nix :-) Das Sympatische an den Amerikanern ist, dass wo es auch immer möglich ist nicht zu laufen, tun sie es auch nicht. Das kommt zus zweien Wandermuffeln eigentlich ganz recht. So auch im Monument Valley. Es gibt einen Trail den man mit dem Auto abfahren kann und so das ganze Reservoir sieht, klimatisiert und ohne Staub :-) Mann konnte mit den Navajo Indianern auch in einem offenen Jeep fahren, aber das war sau teuer und der Staub den die Leute da schluckten war unmenschlich... Unser kleiner Nissan packte die Naturstrasse prima! Nach einmal rundherum und vielen Fotostops bei vielen Felsformationen mit lustigen Namen, gingen wir ins View Hotel um auf der Terrasse einen Drink (natürlich ohne Alkohol weil wir zwischen Utah und Arizona sind und da gibts erst recht nichts :-) den Tag ausklingen liesen. Danach machten wir uns auf den abenteuerlichen Weg zu den Hobit Häusern wo wir schlafen sollten. Auf der Wegbeschreibung hies es - immer weiterfahren - nie anhalten!! OK - da hatten wir schon ein mulmiges Gefühl und wir verstanden auch warum: es gab viele tiefe Sand-abschnitte auf dem Weg dahin. Es ist wie auf viel Schnee zu fahren. Die Räder können auf einmal nicht mehr greifen und man "schwimmt" so durch und betet es bis zum nächsten festen Abschnitt zu schaffen. Das Glück war uns hold und wir schafften es zum Fire Tree, die Hobit ähnlichen Häusern wo wir die Nacht verbringen sollten. Es sind Häuser die Indianer früher so gebaut hatten. Unsere Version war sehr ausgearbeitet mit elektrischem Anschluss, Licht und einem Kühlschrank. Wir asen noch ein bisschen Geburtstagskuchen und guckten auf einem Liegestuhl noch bis spät in die Nacht in den Sternenhimmel. Ein schöner Geburtstag ging zu ende.

Zoë's Birthday! My day started at 5am.....I tiptoed out of the room  and drove to Saveway's who was already open! I bought everything which looked like Birthday. Balloons, Teacup, loads of sweets, and an Oreo Birthday-cake etc. I also wanted to buy an Alcopop for Zoë as in Switzerland she would be allowed to drink it now, but in Arizona there is this law where you cant buy alcohol between 2 and 6am..... Back in the room I decorated it as good as possible, put a card and a Swisscom yearly subscription next to her and crawled back to bed. Her day started good. Then she talked to Joel and cried buckets when she watched the beautiful video he did for her. I meanwhile waited patiently in the garden, peacefully with a rabbit and a lizard in my company. Eventually we started our journey to Monument Valley. Again a beautiful landscape passed by us - and Zoë slept... In the middle of the desert we stopped at a fuel station - where there was a indian flee-market!! What we really appreciate at the americans is: if you can avoid walking they wont walk ;-) This is very much in our sense as we are hike-grumpies. So seen in the Monument Valley. There is a lovely trial which you can drive through and see the full reservoir, air conditioned and without any dust. There were Navajo Indians offering open roof Jeep tours which were very expensive and the people had to swallow dust - though... Our small Nissan managed the gravel greatly. After a full round and many fotostops at rock-formation with funny names we proceeded to the View hotel to have a drink (no alcohol as we are sandwiched in between Utah and Arizona) on the terrace and so ended our excursion of the day. Later we proceeded to our Hobbit houses night camp. In the directions it stated: NEVER stop! That made is feeling queazy and we worried and soon we knew why. There were sandbanks on the gravel road which felt like driving through deep snow. Soon the tires have no grip anymore and you float through the patch. We prayed our car would make it from one pacht to the other and we were heard. We were lucky and made it to the Fire Tree the Hobbit lookalike houses where we stayed overnight. They are houses which the indians did build in the past. Our version was a little more elaborated with electrical lights and fridge! We ate the remainders of the birthday cake and admired the stars from a sunbed till late at night. A nice Birthday ended.
