Volcanic Popayán

Veröffentlicht: 30.12.2019

We tried hitchhiking out of Cali to Popayán and didn't work. We eventually took a bus. Maybe the street was too busy due to Christmas time, maybe our looks were gnarly that day, I don't know. We arrived in the late afternoon by bus - the good thing is that they stop wherever you are. The driver told me he would go directly (I asked) but as we arrived in some town half way we had to switch the bus - ours was only half full. So all the passengers squeezed themselves into another bus, the last ones literally stood at the open door while the bus drove. Driving here is very.. economical - many people, few busses.

Popayán itself is beautiful and calm. They paint the town every year white again, every single building.

It's all white here
It's beautiful but doesn't help with orientation
These guys were preparing for street music
Everywhere in Colombia is also super nice street art
We hid during rain and had some coffee (on ice) with juice. Yes that is no beer - it's juice.

The next day we went to a volcano. Went to bed super early because the only bus there leaves the town at 5 in the morning.

The bus brought us up to 3500m, our destination, the volcano crater was at 4600m.

The day started off amazingly - usually it's more cloudy

A guide is obligatory, it's to support the indigenous people living here, same as the entry fee for the national park. Some time ago the money went to the government, now it goes directly to the people, which is a very good thing here in Colombia. The indigenous people fought hard for years for this.

This is Alonso, our guide. Super lovely person!

There was the option to take a shortcut by car but that costs a lot and the distance to the volcanos crater is just 6km one way (with 1km inclination 🤣), so we walked.

A creative bridge to go over the fence
More creative bridges
Beautiful sights, we are already over the clouds

Pilimbala is the town at the foot of the mountain. We already felt the altitude but at this point it wasn't too bad.

Happy cows enjoying the sight with us
The landscape is already pretty arid, no trees are growing here anymore
I love the sight of cows at this height, this one on the hill totally nailed it 🤙
This could be from an airplane but we walked up there 💪💪
Interesting transition of landscape

The picture above shows the transition of the landscape super well. All the way down in the valley are trees and jungle, then follows a drier climate you saw already and then at around 4500 there is just rocks and and stones. Snow starts at around 5000 but we luckily "only" had to go up to 4600. I can tell you, it is pretty rough. There were people not making the last 100 meters inclination and surrendering shortly before the crater. The weather the day before was super shit so no one got to go up that day. All these guys went today, so we have been quite a lot, around 30 people on the top. As far as I can tell, we have been the only ones going by foot, the rest took the expensive shortcut by car and skipped half the way. The last half is the more difficult one tho (obviously).

Enough talk, here is the crater:

Damn big hole!
Proof we really made it and not just ripped pictures off Google
The way down again - through the clouds

Since we left together with a bunch of other people who went by car, we asked if we could join them to the foot of the mountain which seemed to be no problem, they have had a big ass Jeep.

As we arrived the driver suddenly wanted money. He was from some tour agency and would drive these people all the way back to Popayán. As we explained him that we won't pay since we never talked about money he asked us furiously if you get anything for free in life, especially public transport. We explained him we barely pay for busses and hitchhike a lot, which he didn't appreciate at all but accepted eventually and let us go without paying.

We then started hitchhiking back to Popayán, right in front of where the angry driver waited for his tourist group to go to some restaurant. We asked some car that was parked and got off right in front of his eyes. It was glorious. But the best part was that the couple which took us didn't go directly to Popayán but went to another part of the national park.

First stop was this bad ass waterfall
Close up

We continued by car on this terrible dirt road.

Anyone need a new wallpaper for their desktop?

Then we arrived at the main attraction, the hot thermal waters of San Juan. Bathing was prohibited due to the very delicate structures but it was just TOO beautiful. Later the people working for nature preservation told us that everything there, except the ways and bridges, is 100% natural, they don't even remove any plants.

The water is white from all the sulfur

I'll just keep putting pictures here..

The moss here looks super blurry, like the picture is not sharp but that is actually the structure of the moss!
Close up. Still looks blurry, this moss is super weird
The soil in the picture above is black and charred - not because of an "active" fire but of a chemical reaction from the volcanic gases that burn everything extremely slow.
Im adding these pictures and am amazed again by how beautiful this place was. Absolutely stunning 🤩🤩
These hot springs left us totally breathless, we had no idea what actually was there since we only came for the volcano and were completely surprised by them. We also have been alone there with our two guys giving us a lift.
Today we went to a small town in the mountains called Inza. Here are legendary tombs which wait for us to be explored tomorrow but more of that in the next blog entry.
Until then, have a great time and hopefully an amazing new years eve!
