Vacation in Zimbabwe : Highlights & Travel Tips

Zimbabwe is one of southern Africa’s most rewarding destinations for travelers seeking dramatic landscapes, exceptional wildlife, and a deep sense of place. The country is best known for Victoria Falls—one of the world’s great natural wonders—but its appeal goes far beyond the famous cascade. Visitors can explore rich national parks, encounter abundant wildlife on safari, and discover ancient history at Great Zimbabwe, the remarkable stone ruins that gave the country its name. Compared with some of the region’s busier destinations, Zimbabwe often feels more relaxed and less crowded, which adds to its adventurous charm.

Key highlights include viewing Victoria Falls from both scenic lookouts and the Zambezi River, game drives and walking safaris in Hwange National Park, and canoeing or wildlife viewing in Mana Pools. Travelers interested in culture and history should make time for local markets, contemporary Zimbabwean art, and the UNESCO-listed Great Zimbabwe ruins. For practical planning, the dry season generally offers easier wildlife viewing and more comfortable travel conditions, while carrying some cash, checking road and park transfer arrangements in advance, and combining flights with overland travel can make a trip smoother. It’s also wise to book popular safari lodges early and pack layers, since mornings and evenings can be cool even when days are warm.

Best time to travel Zimbabwe

September is the strongest month based on the popularity data, with February, May, and July also showing solid interest. Overall, late dry-season travel—especially September—is a great choice because wildlife viewing is typically excellent as animals gather around water sources, while conditions are generally favorable for sightseeing and safari experiences.
