The second day of our journey began relaxed – with a hearty breakfast at the hotel in Frankfurt. Instead of directly taking a taxi, we decided on a little walk to the airport. A few kilometers in the fresh air sounded like the perfect start to the day – and we had plenty of time, after all.

Upon arriving at the airport, we were actually quite early. However, this had an unexpected advantage: we discovered a quiet, secluded area with futuristic, capsule-like seating. The perfect spot to take a breath before the adventure really begins.

Our airplane: a Boeing 757-200 from Icelandair, registration TF-FIO – like many of the airline's aircraft, named after an Icelandic volcano: Krafla. Built in April 1999, making it a true classic of the skies. With just this mix of nostalgia and adventure feeling, we took off towards the north.

The landing in Reykjavik couldn't have been more impressive: a snow-covered landscape that immediately made it clear – we have arrived in Iceland.

At the airport, we were welcomed by our tour guide Ullrich – a friendly Iceland expert who radiated trust immediately. There we also met our fellow travelers for the first time: a group of 24 people in total. The next few days will therefore be exciting not only in terms of scenery but also in terms of the people.

The first bus ride to the hotel immediately brought a small challenge – one of our fellow travelers felt unwell. Hopefully, that will improve soon. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

In the evening, we were drawn to the only open restaurant in the area – an Italian place. Two hearty pizzas and two beers later, we were proudly 70 Euros poorer. Welcome to Iceland. However, there was also a nice encounter with a curious local who asked us about our journey with interest – a first small insight into Icelandic hospitality.

Back at the hotel, we let the day wind down comfortably. One thing stood out immediately: the heating was running at full blast – feeling as if directly powered by a volcano. It couldn't be more authentic.

But while we were looking forward to the upcoming days, the first uncertainty arose: A storm is forecast for tomorrow. It is still unclear whether our planned route can be maintained.

Iceland shows already: Nothing goes completely according to plan here – and that’s exactly what makes it exciting.

Stay tuned…
