The evening before started off innocently - after dinner, we went for a 'quick' drink with our travel companions (now officially declared family) at the legendary Valhalla Bar next to the hotel. There we were greeted with true Viking hospitality: rough, warm... and surprisingly cooler than our beer.
As if that wasn't highlight enough, there was also a small Viking museum including axe throwing. Yes, you read that right - you throw axes there. And no, we're not going to talk about how accurate we were.
The morning then began appropriately with a deluxe Icelandic breakfast: fish oil smoothie (for inner radiance), coffee (for outer functionality), and bread rolls plus vitamins (for the conscience). Strengthened by this, we headed into the final leg of our round trip - back to Reykjavik.
On the agenda: the legendary Golden Circle.
First stop: the impressive Gullfoss.
A waterfall that doesn't just fall - no, it plunges dramatically in two stages into a deep gorge. You stand there, getting wet, taking photos... and realizing: nature really likes to show off.
Next, we went to the Geysir Geothermal Area, home of the famous Strokkur.
Every 8 minutes, it shoots a hot water fountain into the air - basically Iceland's version of a punctual public transport system. So there we stood, waiting... and every time someone said 'Now!', nothing happened. And then suddenly: BOOM - water! Excitement! Wet shoes!
After a final city tour, it was official: our round trip was over.
Time to say goodbye - to our bus driver, our tour guide, and probably also to our sense of time.
Our tour guide remained mysterious until the end: when someone asked for his address, he charmingly deflected. He probably just didn't want to receive 300 Christmas cards saying 'Best wishes from Buxtehude'. Understandable.
At 5:00 PM we continued in a smaller group - mission: to make Reykjavik unsafe.
First stop: the impressive Hallgrímskirkja.
A building that looks like someone transformed lava into architecture. After that: walking up and down the pedestrian zone - classic 'walking', as the professional says.
And of course, a detour to the Irish Pub was a must - after all, one must stay culturally open.
To conclude, we eagerly stood in front of Íslenski Barinn - The Icelandic Bar.
Wait time? Yes. Hunger? Yes. Expectations? High.
But to be honest: after this day, the food can really only be good. Or at least better than the fish oil smoothie.
