They say traveling broadens the mind – but sometimes it mainly leads to great stories. For instance, when you're standing in a hotel lobby at night, wondering why a tour group willingly boards a bus in pouring rain. The answer? Northern Lights! Spoiler: The Northern Lights were probably on a break that evening. But hey – hope always travels with you 🚍.

Day 6: From Hornafjörður to Hvolsvöllur – a Day Between Natural Wonders and Little Myths

Today’s journey took us along the spectacular South Coast of Iceland – and the first stop was a hit: the famous glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón. Among the drifting icebergs, a persistent rumor circulated in our group: Titanic was filmed here!

Well… almost. In fact, the site served as a filming location for James Bond – Die Another Day – which is at least just as cool, right?

Moss Instead of Moon Landscape:

Between the highlights awaited another natural phenomenon: a lava field about 250 years old, completely covered with thick, soft moss. Almost surreal – as if someone laid a green carpet over solidified lava. A perfect place to pause and ponder how incredibly changeable our Earth is.

#Black Beach and Wild Waves

At the legendary black beach Reynisfjara, Iceland showcased its dramatic side. Meter-high waves crashed against the shore – so impressive that even our usually calm guide suddenly grabbed the camera. When he takes a photo, you know: This is a moment.

We then continued to the promontory of Dyrhólaey, where not only a breathtaking view awaited us but also numerous seabirds elegantly gliding through the air. The view of the volcanic islands just offshore – simply spectacular.

Another highlight didn’t take long to arrive: the mighty Skógafoss. With its 60 meters of drop, it is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country – and yes, you will get wet. But that’s just part of the experience here.

Hardly back on the bus, dinner was already announced – and it sounded almost too good to be true: smoked salmon, chicken with sides, and as a crowning finish, a lava cake. Simply delicious.
