A day that turned out differently than planned – and that’s precisely what made it unforgettable. Instead of idyllic waterfalls, we faced storm warnings, closed roads, and an adventurous drive through Iceland's rugged winter landscape. Yet, it was this combination of natural forces and little moments of comfort that made the day truly special.
## Day 3: Reykjavík – Akureyri
After a restful night and a delicious breakfast – albeit in a cold breakfast room – we set off promptly at 8 AM on the Ring Road towards Akureyri.
Hardly on our way, our tour guide Ulrich gave us a quick language lesson: *“Góðan dag”* for “Good day” and *“Takk”* for “Thank you”. A simple but lovely gesture that gives you the feeling of settling in a little more in the country.
But it was soon clear: This day would unfold differently as planned. A storm warning crossed our plans. Neither the impressive hot spring Deildartunguhver with its 100 °C hot waters nor the picturesque lava waterfalls Hraunfossar were accessible. Safety came first – and thus our journey became more and more an escape from the storm and impending road closures.
In Iceland, a mountain pass at 500 meters quickly feels like an alpine pass at 1500 meters – both in terms of weather and scenery. With our bus equipped with spike tires, we battled through snowdrifts and fierce gusts of wind. The vehicle swayed noticeably as an almost surreal winter landscape passed by outside.
A brief stop in Akureyri then brought a small contrast: souvenir shops, scratchy wool sweaters, and a well-deserved beer during happy hour.
Our hotel was finally secluded in a rural setting – perfect conditions for darkness and perhaps even for Northern Lights. The nearby mountain pass road was already closed, but fortunately, our accommodation was right in front of it.
The highlight of the evening: the hot tub. While the body relaxed in the pleasantly hot water, the snowstorm whipped around our heads – a surreal but absolutely fascinating moment.
Good thing we had pre-booked dinner at the hotel, as there were no alternatives in sight – and the storm continued to rage outside.
Exhausted, chilled to the bone, and simultaneously filled with impressions, we finally fell into bed – feeling like we had experienced a true
Iceland day.
