BLOG 24: Surroundings of Granada 2 / Volcán Mombacho & The Isletas de Granada

Today we first drive by car to about halfway up Volcán Mombacho. The upper part with its very steep, single-lane road must be traversed in a Toyota pickup from the park administration; we are lucky to be able to sit inside the car instead of having to climb in the back.

Mombacho is 1,345 meters high and an active stratovolcano, but it has not erupted since 1570. Smoking fumaroles in some areas indicate that volcanic activity is still ongoing below. Previous eruptions, evidenced by geological studies, have caused the volcanic flanks to collapse at least twice, creating the small islands
