Contrasting Architecture of Tbilisi

In addition to the architecturally impressive Orthodox churches, Tbilisi offers more highlights of architectural art. These range from dilapidated and nearly uninhabitable buildings, through old masterpieces from the Soviet era, to modern and unusual structures. All are located in the heart of Tbilisi and can be admired on any extended stroll.

It's worth trying to visit the 'Italian' courtyards every once in a while. They transport you to another world, and sometimes you can almost hear the voices of playing children.

Truly impressive is the gigantic statue of 'Mother Georgia - Kartlis Deda', which stands like a guardian angel on the mountain, watching over Tbilisi.

A classic example of a Soviet building is the 'Cloudscraper House'. This served as the administrative seat for the Ministry of Road and Bridge Construction and is now the headquarters of the National Bank of Georgia.
