After spending the first night in our cell surprisingly peacefully, breakfast was served in the former chapel. In keeping with the ambiance, today we got to know the Bagel Guillotine 😂.

After a good meal, we participated in the guided tour. This is included with an overnight stay, but can also be booked separately, e.g., through GetyourGuide. It is highly recommended. We not only learned a lot about the prison but also about the history of Ottawa, all in a very entertaining way.

And yes, the hostel was inaugurated by Prince Philip.

You can also see how construction evolved over three centuries in this small space: prison, prison extension, and art gallery all within 10m.

The prison was used until 1972; however, the conditions during its 110 years of operation were likely always catastrophic.

Cell for up to eight people with the 'furnishings' of that time

The cells initially had NO furnishings except for the 'Honey Bucket'. Those who could afford it brought their own blankets or even a bed. Whether or not they could keep it was at the discretion of the guards.

Afterwards, our private guide gave us a fantastic city tour. All the important sights, beautiful spots, and fun and interesting information—perfect!

Little fun fact: The largest toilet paper factory in Canada (the red building on the left in the image above) was built in the province of Québec. Right across from the Parliament Building in Ottawa.

We also found the market hall again, but like in Montreal, there are small art and souvenir shops and restaurants inside.

Conclusion: Walked a lot - Saw a lot!
