Day 2 – Straupitz: Fresh linseed oil and true craftsmanship
After the rather disappointing view from the Bismarck Tower in Burg, we continued to Straupitz – and there we were truly rewarded. The Dutch linseed oil mill is a place that surprises: historical, vibrant, and full of the scent of freshly pressed oil.
The mill is a technical monument and at the same time an active operation. Here, cold-pressed linseed oil is still produced today – completely traditionally, with heavy grinding stones and a lot of manual labor. We were able to watch the oil being produced:
• The linseed is cleaned and slowly ground
• In the press, the golden oil is produced under high pressure
• And the best part: We were allowed to taste a sample, directly from the press – it doesn't get fresher than this
The flavor was intense, nutty and warm – completely different from the linseed oil from the supermarket. A drop on bread is enough to understand why this oil was once considered a remedy.
The mill itself is impressive:
• An authentically preserved Dutch windmill building with a rotating roof
• Inside, a functioning technology that is vividly explained
• And a small shop with linseed oil, herbal products, and regional specialties
Conclusion: The Dutch linseed oil mill in Straupitz is a true highlight in the Spreewald. Anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship – or who simply wants to try good oil – should definitely stop by here.
