Bernau for dessert – A charming finale with a bright touch
After visiting Spreewald and the Gardens of the World, we should have been satisfied. Should have been. But that’s how it is with good trips: You always want just a little more. So we quickly set our sights on Bernau – a small town that turned out to be a delightful dessert for our tour.
And what a dessert it is! Bernau welcomes us with bright facades that look as if someone has freshly primed the city – in pastels, with love. The old town is compact, well-kept, and so clean that you would almost want to walk barefoot (we didn’t, but you could have).
The city wall? A real gem! Medieval, but not musty. You stroll alongside it and think: If walls could talk, they would probably recite poems here. Or at least whisper charmingly: ‘Welcome, you Spreewald latecomers!’
What we missed a bit: small shops. The kind of places where you find handmade soaps, local jams, or quirky postcards. Instead: lots of quiet, plenty of air, and ample space to breathe. Nice as well – but our inner souvenir hunter felt a bit underwhelmed.
Still: Bernau surprised us. It was like a friendly neighbor offering you a piece of cake as a farewell – not spectacular, but heartfelt. And after a day filled with cable cars, tea, and garden art, that was just the right dose of city.
Conclusion: Bernau is not a place for shopping marathons, but a perfect conclusion for anyone still wanting more after Spreewald and the Gardens of the World. Bright, charming, clean – and with a wall worth seeing. We say: Thank you, Bernau. You were the cherry on top of our travel cake.
