From Carriage to Coffee Break: A Day in Bad Muskau

Published: 21.09.2025

Day 3 – Bad Muskau: Castle Romance, Tower Training, and Ice Cream with a View (plus a little border advantage)

Today, we briefly left the Spreewald behind and traveled a bit further east – to Bad Muskau. And what can I say? I was expecting a nice castle. What I got was a Gesamtkunstwerk of architecture, landscape, history, and ice cream.

Muskau Castle – more than just pretty

The castle is not just beautiful. It is truly beautiful. Elegant, bright, inviting – not a gloomy edifice. The exhibition inside is well executed, not overloaded, but with a clear focus on the history of the park and its eccentric creator.

And then came the moment that topped it all: We took a carriage ride. In the museum. Yes, really. A historical carriage on wheels that moves through a room while you see the park landscape pass by on a screen. A little quirky, a little silly – and that’s exactly why it’s great.

Castle Café: Ice Cream with a View

After so much culture, a person needs some sugar, and the castle café delivers. We had ice cream that made us briefly forget that we had already climbed 125 steps. Creamy, not too sweet, with a view of the castle facade – that wasn’t just a snack, it was an experience.

Tower Training: 125 Steps to Happiness

The climb up the castle tower is not for weak calves. 125 steps, narrow and steep – but at the top awaits the reward: a view over the park that takes your breath away. Not just because of the height, but because of the sheer size and beauty of the park.

Muskau Park: Landscape Architecture with a Wow Factor

The park is enormous. And by that, I mean: really enormous. You can get lost, but you'll do it in style. Paths, sight lines, bridges – everything feels well thought out yet natural at the same time. You can tell that someone with a vision was at work here.

What we particularly liked: The park is not sterile. It’s alive. People stroll, children play, dogs sniff around – and yet the atmosphere remains calm, almost majestic.

Border Bonus: Fueling with a View of Your Wallet

And since we were so close to the border, we briefly went over to Poland – to refuel. What can I say? The price difference was not only visible, but also tangible. A little border trip with a big impact on your wallet. Convenient, straightforward, and somehow liberating.

Conclusion: Bad Muskau Surprises

We expected a nice outing. What we got was a day full of little highlights: a museum carriage ride, a tower with a view, a park that breathes history – and an ice cream that sticks in your memory.

Bad Muskau is not a place you visit “just like that.” It’s a place to experience. And those who think castles are just for history nerds should take a museum carriage ride. With an ice cream in hand, a smile on their face – and a full tank from Poland.
