On January 26th, we traveled to Malang. The city is especially known for the natural wonders in the surrounding area: the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and the Bromo National Park. However, Malang has something to offer itself: the Jodipan neighborhood, which has an intriguing history behind it.

This was formerly a rather poor neighborhood by the river, climbing steeply up the mountain. As there was no organized waste collection within the neighborhood, many people threw their garbage into the river instead of hauling heavy bags up to the main road. Subsequently, a group of students came up with an idea and spoke with the community. The community is divided into 20(?)-household units, each led by representatives responsible for community peace and satisfaction. This system was adopted by the Japanese during their occupation. With these representatives, a transformation of the neighborhood was initiated: people painted their houses and the streets in vibrant colors. Soon, tourists began to arrive and paid money to visit the neighborhood, which now funds waste disposal directly within the area. In addition, the presence of observers enhances the social pressure to dispose of waste properly. Today, the neighborhood is beautiful, and the residents benefit from tourism.
