We also wanted to see a bit of the Indonesian island landscape, so on January 30, we took the train from Malang to Ketapang in East Java and from there took a ferry to Bali. We spent one night there before taking another ferry to the mini island of Gili Trawangan on January 31.
The time spent there was enjoyable; we wanted to party again and have some beach time, both of which are great on the island that you can circle in about 1.5 hours. However, it was also a bit of a travel shock because it is very touristy there and thus feels less authentic than Java. Additionally, we felt somewhat uncomfortable with the mass tourism, as some people did not behave very respectfully. Nevertheless, it was still a lovely time with a very nice snorkeling excursion!
