Cuisine in the Caribbean, where the locals eat

Last night it rained heavily. And throughout the day, there were intermittent rain showers reported.

Therefore, only a small excursion to a peninsula near Trinite.

Ultimately, local food at street stalls and small shops was the highlight of today.

Those who know us, know that we enjoy trying everything and eating local dishes. And the best place for that is where the locals eat.

First, our host picked fresh bananas from a banana plant right outside our door. He explained that there are over 150 varieties of bananas and the one he gave us was an apple banana. And indeed, alongside the intense banana flavor, there was also a hint of apple. Delicious and something we had never tasted before. In Martinique, there is even a dedicated banana museum.

After breakfast, we drove to the peninsula near Tartane. Although it was cloudy, the beach there is really wonderful. The entire bay has a barrier reef, which means there is hardly any surf in the bay. Perfectly relaxing for swimming.

At a snack shack set up by the roadside, we bought 6 Accras, fried fish balls. They were so good that we ordered another 6 and ate them right on the beach.

…and yes, many women here look exactly like those in the photo above. When they are young, they are slender, and around 25-30 they look like that.

As a dessert to the fried snacks, we then treated ourselves to a Flan de Coco and a Tartelette Ananas at a bakery (recommended by our host).

Both were exceptionally delicious.

On our way to the mangroves, we suddenly saw many red crabs scuttling along the path, very shy, but there were countless numbers of them.

We hiked a bit, but it was so oppressively humid that we turned back.

All the people we encountered looked completely worn out.

So we returned to the beach, sought shelter under a palm tree from the raindrops, and took a nap while listening to reggae music from our beach neighbors.

Then at the roadside stand from Kay Ti‘ Babi (recommended from the internet), we had two Bokits. Homemade buns with onions, carrots, salad, and barbecue sauce. I had one with Merguez and Simone had chicken. That was also exceptionally delicious. We had been here before, and there’s always a long line at the snack truck, it must be good.

Finally, we quickly did some shopping at the supermarket, check out the picture, clean and a huge selection. No comparison to Barbados and certainly not to St. Lucia.

Tomorrow is already our last day here in Martinique, then we’re taking the propeller plane to Guadeloupe. Everything feels too short, one should have at least 7-8 days for each island to really settle in. But unfortunately, Fraule couldn’t get more vacation time. ☹
