After learning about the history of the prosperous and self-assured city of Gdansk during a tour today, we headed to the Centrum Solidarnosc in the afternoon, a massive metal structure where the development of the Polish trade union is recounted through many historical documents.
The photographs and reports from the time regarding the strike of the factory workers led by Lech Wałęsa in Gdansk are still very vivid in our memory. It was not so clear to us that it took almost 10 years after the crackdown by the communist government for free elections to finally occur. And that the Polish Pope played a significant role in that success was also not apparent.
What stands out is that the Polish population - just like the Lithuanian, Estonian, and Latvian populations - has had the shared experience of fighting for their freedom, which they won with a great deal of courage and perseverance. That is an experience that only the East in Germany could have had.
