On the way to Gdansk, we made a stop at the Malbork Castle. This castle boasts several superlatives: the largest brick building and, based on its area, the largest castle in the world. We, used to the Sparrenburg, were quite astonished by the dimensions of this castle dedicated to Mary from the 13th century, which was long the main seat of the Teutonic Order. The -considered questionable from today's perspective- history of this German Order also met us in some places of the Baltics.
Although we are not big fans of castles and palaces, we were fascinated by the thoughtful planning of the building. With the help of an audio guide, we also discovered the various military and religious functions of this castle.
