Today we are heading all the way up north along the Kunene (a river you can never see from the road). Here, Namibia is completely different: thanks to irrigation from the river, there are not only plenty of livestock (goats, cattle, donkeys), but also fields. Corn and even rice are cultivated, and you often see small gardens near the huts. Quite impressive houses show that black farmers (there are almost no white ones left here) can also be successful!
After a very wild rainy season from December to February, it must have rained quite a lot here. On both sides of the asphalt road (yes, we are currently being spoiled with good roads), there are large water areas where many people are fishing. Fish are also frequently offered by the roadside. The ponds are filled with beautiful water lilies - it is not uncommon to see so much water here.
Now I would like to take a little trip into the world of insects. Here, for us Europeans, there are millions and millions of insects everywhere, which is completely unfamiliar. From mosquitoes to huge beetles, mega grasshoppers, giant dragonflies, and large day and night moths. At the market in Oshikango, where I shop, a young woman offers me dried caterpillars.
She tells me they are eaten here with noodles.

Of course, the insects serve as food for the rich birdlife. Every morning, one is awakened by loud chirping, cawing, and birdsong.
Tomorrow we will continue towards Khaudum, maybe the most important point of our journey, and we hope very much that this wild national park is accessible despite the water.
