Today, the trip to our last destination was on the agenda: Vancouver. A little bit of nostalgia started to creep in as the end of our journey approached. But we also began reflecting on what we would do differently if we were to repeat such a trip.
Culture and History
But first (after a breakfast overlooking Victoria), we visited the Royal BC Museum in Victoria. Unfortunately, the permanent exhibit on the First Nations was not accessible at the moment, but for a positive reason: it had been realized that an exhibition about the First Nations can only be rightfully done by collaborating with them, leading to the closure of the previous exhibit in 2019 and the ongoing work on a new joint exhibition.
In its place, there was an exhibition on the countless languages of the First Nations, how these were lost through relocation and attempted assimilation by colonizers, and how there are today efforts to revive this important part of the identity of the individual tribes.
There was also a walkable model city of Victoria from its founding era, complete with many stories about the immigrant cultures from Africa, China, or Japan. The latter brought photography to Victoria. But who is the funny chubby man in the picture gallery?
Generally, Canada has not been free from racism, but compared to many other countries, there is significant investment here in overcoming this and constant improvement.
In the museum shop, we chatted nicely with a lady who volunteers here every Saturday – also to engage with the people. She originally came from the North Sea coast and emigrated to Canada in 1954. Back then, she was 19 years old. So, now let’s do the math and see how old she is.
Sunny Ferry Ride
Then we took the ferry back to Vancouver. This time we had perfect weather and a phenomenal view. Then to the airport to return our four-wheeled companion from the last two weeks at the car rental before taking the train to our last hotel.
In the evening, we explored the first part of Vancouver, and after a delicious sushi dinner, we went to bed.
