Today, one of our highlights for this trip was scheduled: Whale Watching in the Strait of Georgia.
We set off at half-past seven with a brisk walk towards Fisherman’s Wharf. Here we had booked our tour. At first, we wanted to quickly grab something from the bakery as we needed a break from the lavish Canadian breakfast offerings. But even here, that didn’t really work out for us. Either we ended up with something overly sweet or heavily topped with cheese, egg, and hollandaise – of course, served warm. So we ultimately boarded with full stomachs.
Canadian Charm and Start of the Tour
The briefing from the Whale Watching team was, as is often the case here in Canada, very warm, comprehensive, and entertaining. So we started around 9 a.m., equipped with the necessary basic knowledge, with Molly, Jo-Anne, and Captain Rob for our four-hour tour.
First Sighting of a Whale
One good sign of whales is the gathering of whale watching boats of all sizes, just like a gathering of seagulls indicates rich fish stocks. After a quick ride around the islands off Victoria, we soon encountered our first whale: a fully grown male orca of impressive size. Unfortunately, it's not clearly visible in the pictures, but live, it was indeed impressive. The orca named Amir was not shy and continually showed off in all its glory.
Encounter with an Orca Family
Then we continued our journey to make further sightings. After (what felt like) just a few minutes, we had the next encounter. This time it was an orca family: a female with three calves, with the oldest being larger than its mother (which we are familiar with). Here, we could actually observe the whales hunting. The family moved quickly around a small bay where some seals were resting. The action was taking place underwater. But there was also plenty to see above the water’s surface. We could have watched forever, but before we knew it, 3.5 of our 4 hours were already up, and we had to make our way back.
Return and Sightseeing in Victoria
Under brilliant sunshine, we entered the now very popular Fisherman’s Wharf. A wonderful experience has once again been etched into our memories today.
In the afternoon, we further explored the city, its sights, and shops.
