Actually, today was fully planned: In the morning, visiting Wells Gray Provincial Park and checking out all three waterfalls, and in the afternoon, whitewater rafting. But then we wouldn’t have enjoyed our dreamy resort, and overall it would have been quite stressful. Since we were still feeling the drive in our bones, we spontaneously decided to swap the morning program for a relaxed start at our resort.
A few rounds of basketball, table tennis, and a giant Connect Four – and just enjoying the tranquility and nature.
Whitewater Rafting: Adventure on the Water
At noon, we headed to Clearwater for whitewater rafting. Excitedly nervous, we found ourselves there. And it was going to take a while before we were on the water: first, signing several times that the operator is not liable for anything – we already knew that from Niagara Falls and similar situations. Then squeezing into the wetsuits, finding a fitting helmet, and boarding the school bus.
Then we drove 20 minutes in a virtually un-suspended bus over a bumpy road upstream. Upon arrival, we still had to carry the boats down to the shore. By the time we got there, we were already soaked in sweat. But then we finally boarded. One more briefing on the commands – and we were ready to go. We were a bit tense, of course: What might await us? But let me tell you: It was a huge amount of fun.
After the first meters in calm water, the first waves came that we had to paddle through – high five, we did it! The difficulty – or the intensity of the waves – was gradually increased, and with every plunge, we received a refreshing shower as a bonus. Then came a section for free swimming – not without current, but without dangerous rocks. I don’t know if it was the adrenaline or just the effort of paddling in - once again - perfect weather or simply the wetsuits, but the 13 degrees in the water were not cold but a soothing refreshment. In the end, those who wanted could jump into the water from a 6-meter high rock. Emilian and Gabriel did not miss that opportunity.
When we finally reached our destination, we were happy but also quite exhausted and glad to be back on land. However, rafting is an absolute recommendation and certainly one of the highlights of our trip.
Evening Encounter with Nature
In the evening, Patricia cooked us a delicious meal in our cabin, and while eating, we decided that we would at least hike to Helmcken Falls tomorrow. And while the young ones fell asleep over their phone screens, we took an evening walk in our resort – and we promptly encountered four-legged visitors right in front of our hut. A not-so-small deer, and it really didn’t seem startled by our presence.
