Before heading to the island, we took a bus up to the west coast - to Lumut - and stayed for two nights. Lumut is located 160km northeast of the capital Kuala Lumpur. About the bus ride: initially, it was supposed to be only a 4-5 hour bus ride, but it turned into 7 hours! No idea why. The bus driver only stopped once(!) and that was relatively early in the journey. Feeling a bit knocked out, thirsty, and with a headache, we arrived in Lumut and checked into our hostel. It had a very nice location right on the waterfront, with the bus station and ferry nearby. A beautiful and mostly quiet area (unless the men with leaf blowers are at it again 😂). But beware: mosquitoes!
In those two days, we didn't see much of Lumut. We took a stroll along the promenade, but that was about it. There are many shops nearby selling trinkets, colorful beach accessories, and souvenirs, a few restaurants, a 7Eleven, an ATM, and of course, hotels. Dried fish is being sold everywhere.
Our Hostel: Hinggap Backpacker Hostel, great location, right by the water, but for various reasons (thin mattresses on wooden bunk beds, we were eaten alive by bed bugs), we do not recommend it.
We booked a spot on the ferry on 22.12.22. ⛴️ We stayed on Pangkor Island over Christmas and New Year.
