Food and Fake in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown

For amidst the sky-scraping towers, one discovers a very different Kuala Lumpur, one that does not suppress its past, but carefully preserves and restores it - at least in certain neighborhoods.</p><p style='text-align:justify'><b>Temples and Theaters</b></p><p style='text-align:justify'>From the Bukit Bintang neighborhood, where I am staying, I took the Metro line 9 (here it is called MRT or Mass Rapid Transit) to Pasar Seni station and plan to walk over to Chinatown from there. However, I first encounter an Indian institution: The Sri Mahamariamman Temple from the second half of the 19th century is the oldest still active Hindu temple in the city. The tower above the entrance to the temple looks like a three-dimensional cartoon: it is adorned with colorful Hindu deities from top to bottom.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>A little later, the next temple, this time in red and gold: The Guan Di Temple is dedicated to the Chinese god of war Guan Yu. That the place cannot be assigned to a single, clearly defined denomination, as we are accustomed to from the Judeo-Christian world, no longer surprises me. In the Guan Di Temple, elements of Chinese folk belief blend with those of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>By chance, I find myself on my walk in Jalan Sang Guna, a narrow alley in the heart of Chinatown, named after Sang Guna, a legendary warrior from the historical Sultanate of Malacca, before it was conquered by the Dutch in 1511. After decades of decay and vacancies, it was finally restored and revitalized as part of an urban redevelopment project, as information boards in Malay and English indicate. Today, it is a somewhat museum-like pedestrian zone with small shops, cafes, and artistic murals.</p><p style='text-align:justify'><b>For All Senses at Once</b></p><p style='text-align:justify'>Finally, I arrive at Petaling Street, the artery of Chinatown. Many visitors even believe it to be the true heart of Kuala Lumpur. As soon as one passes the traditional entrance gate with its multi-tiered yellow Chinese tiled roof (from where the omnipresent Merdeka 118 is also visible), I dive into a world that stimulates all the senses at once.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>Covered by a huge glass roof that protects from the scorching sun during the day and from rain showers in the evening, the street comes alive in the afternoon and mutates into a bustling market. On both sides of Jalan Petaling, a labyrinth of narrow alleys and passageways has formed. They are lined with colonial buildings, many of which are half-dilapidated and consist only of empty facades, backdrops for the densely packed market stalls through which crowds of people flow.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>You cannot walk through Petaling Street without being approached by a vendor every few seconds. Desires that would significantly dent the wallet in real life can be fulfilled here for a handful of ringgit: from Rolex and Omega watches, Nike or Adidas sneakers, and shirts with Balenciaga, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Stone Island prints to Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton bags – everything is here, all fake, all in abundance.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>Anyone who pays the asking price only has themselves to blame. If the vendor asks for 100 ringgit (a little over 20 euros) for a t-shirt, one offers ten and ends up, after loud but laughing protests from the seller, at around 25 (five euros). A bad conscience for the price reduction is unwarranted: no vendor would sell an item for a sum that leads to a loss.</p><p style='text-align:justify'><b>Noodles and Pudding</b></p><p style='text-align:justify'>Above all of Chinatown hangs a mixture of smells from which one can detect fried garlic, hot frying oil, and grilled pork. Eating is more important here than shopping; Chinatown is a culinary wonderland, and Chinese cuisine is celebrated in both upscale, city-renowned restaurants and the humblest street food stall on some forgotten street corner.</p><p style='text-align:justify'>I will remember dishes like Hokkien Mee: fried noodles traditionally prepared over charcoal, in thick soy sauce with pork belly and often with shrimp; Air Mata Kucing: an ice-cold herbal drink made from longan fruits (also called

After two de-stressing weeks on the island of Samosir in Lake Toba on Sumatra, I travel back to Medan on June 16, 2026, and a day later to Kuala Lumpur. I have unsuccessfully tried to extend my Indonesian visa by one month and am using the Malaysian capital for a so-called visa run, which means a short trip abroad to obtain a new visa for another month upon re-entry to Indonesia.

However, during my various visits, I have become a fan of K.L., and instead of the planned few days, I ended up staying for two weeks. Kuala Lumpur likes to present itself as a hyper-modern city with shopping malls, hotel palaces, city, and subway. And of course, with its skyscrapers made of steel, concrete, and glass. Notable examples are the Petronas Twin Towers or the recently opened Merdeka 118, the second tallest building in the world, measuring 678.9 meters to the tip of the antenna, surpassed only by the dizzying Burj Khalifa in the bling-bling world capital of Dubai.
