Day 6: Storm, Sun & Sleeping In – Magerøya Beyond the Globe

After last night's adventure (we didn't get to bed until around 03:00 AM), today started off all about relaxation: Sleeping in!

It's an incredible luxury to stay two nights in the same hotel (in Repvåg) during a road trip. No packing and unpacking, no Tetris in the trunk, just a relaxed start to the day. Since we checked off the big goal 'North Cape' last night, we could focus on the island Magerøya today without the pressure of time. Because it has more to offer than just the globe.

Battle Against the Wind: Respect to the Cyclists

As we set off around noon, the Arctic weather showed its wild side. Though the sun was shining from a bright blue sky, the wind was brutal. It swept across the barren island with such force that you had to lean against the car door just to get it open.

On the way north, real dramas unfolded. The road to the North Cape is filled with touring cyclists in summer, all chasing their dreams. Today, it was hard labor. The gusts were so strong that the fully loaded bikes were repeatedly pushed off course. For us as drivers, this meant: utmost concentration. Overtaking was a test of patience, as you never knew when the next gust of wind would push a cyclist a meter to the side. Honestly, I was so glad to be sitting in the warm, heavy car and not on the saddle.

Honningsvåg & Hidden Gems

Instead of heading to the cape, we went to Honningsvåg. It is the main town on the island and feels almost like a metropolis after the solitude of the tundra. This is where the famous Hurtigruten ships dock, with cafes and life. A lovely place to simply stand by the harbor, watch the fishing boats, and feel the civilization at the end of the world.

But much more exciting were the little detours. We left the main road and visited some of the smaller, lesser-known fishing villages on Magerøya. Here, you find postcard-worthy Norway: tiny harbors, colorful wooden houses clinging to the rugged cliffs, and stockfish racks. It was wonderfully quiet there, far from the tourist buses that usually just drive straight to the North Cape.

Day Summary:

  • Start: Very late (the 3 AM effect).

  • Weather: Sunny, but extremely stormy.

  • Observation: Cyclists at the North Cape are the true heroes (or the insane).

  • Activity: 'Island Hopping' on Magerøya and a visit to Honningsvåg.

  • Feeling: Relaxation at Europe's northernmost point.
