After the relaxing arrival yesterday, today was all about 'making distance'. Our destination was north of Stockholm – a substantial leg that would take us through the heart of southern Sweden.
Anyone who thinks southern Sweden is as flat as a pancake is mistaken. Our route took us through the southern Swedish highlands. Here, the landscape becomes rougher, the forests denser, and the roads roll gently uphill. We followed the main route northward, always parallel to the vast Lake Vättern, the second-largest lake in the country.
Hours of driving can be exhausting, so a break was necessary to stretch. Near Gränna at Lake Vättern, we headed to the Tegnértornet. Instead of just grabbing coffee at the rest area, it was time to climb some stairs! The observation tower rises 27 meters high and offers a fantastic view over the treetops down to Lake Vättern in good weather. The wind really blows around your nose up here – just the right fresh kick for the onward journey.
In the late afternoon, we reached our destination north of Stockholm: Castle Vik (Wiks Slott). No, we didn’t sleep in the grand hall, but our accommodation was situated directly on the beautiful castle grounds. The atmosphere here is completely different from that of a campsite: old avenues, well-kept gardens, and the historic castle in the background. The best part after the long drive: The property is right by the water (a bay of Mälaren). There is a bathing lake area, and even though the temperatures in Scandinavia are often brisk – a jump into the water or at least cooling off the feet was the perfect end to this travel day.
