2025 - July - Vienna - Hazel Brugger at the Vienna Opera House

Hazel Brugger loves Vienna. At least, that's what she says right at the beginning of her show. She loves it so much that she is here very often. But performing at the Vienna Opera House is also new for her and a huge honor. She was indeed invited to be part of the summer cabaret festival "Intermezzo." From July 1 to 12, 2025, different comedians will perform here at the Vienna Opera House every evening.

Because the Vienna State Opera is on summer break, Hazel is basically the holiday substitute here. However, she did not sing or dance.

Actually, the Vienna State Opera is the venue for ballet stars, the Vienna Philharmonic, and opera greats from around the world. The building, which opened in 1869 in Neo-Renaissance style, is truly impressive. Inside, one is initially welcomed by many statues and a grand staircase.

Many staff members then help to find the right way to one’s seat. We had box seats. However, that was more of a coincidence, as the event was completely sold out, and I only got these amazing tickets through the fan sale.

In our small box for nine people, there was a little cloakroom and then three rows of chairs. Fortunately, we had our two seats right at the front, giving us a wonderful view. Interestingly, the architecture of the Vienna State Opera offers many such boxes. Additionally, there are even standing places at the very top.

It was warm everywhere. And so, there was a lot of fanning going on in all areas.

And what does one wear to the opera? I'll reveal it: With Hazel Brugger, it didn’t have to be anything special. Everyone wore casual clothing, including Hazel, even though she claimed to have put on a shirt just for today.

The atmosphere was instantly great, even though Hazel did poke fun at the Austrians. Several times, for example, she alluded to the term "basement" implying that there seems to be a certain affinity for it in this country. This referred to the various cases of people being held captive for years, like Fritzl or Kampusch.

Other than that, her program focused on her private life, her children, depression, and the often-raised suspicion that she is a lesbian. What she made of this topic was very entertaining and ended with the question of who she might be with. Of course, it was with AfD leader Alice Weidel.

You see, Hazel truly enjoyed being on that big stage. And we also really liked it.

And to wrap it up: Both the building itself, as well as Hazel Brugger and her show were very worth seeing and highly recommended.
