7 PM, Denpasar Airport, it was already dark! We had booked a scooter that was to be handed over to us directly at the airport. We met many people there, but not our landlord. After a stressful, sweaty search, we found his two 'staff' at the scooter parking lot outside the airport grounds. Not ten but hundreds of scooters were parked there. Since we could only transport one of our large backpacks on the scooter, we left the other for storage with the two guys. In the dim light, the rental fee and two shaky jet helmets changed hands, and then we set off. We had a 40 km journey ahead to our hotel. Anyone who knows the traffic in Bali knows what that means. Just before midnight and completely on edge, we arrived there.

Here in Ubud, we visited the water temple Pura Tirta Empul, where alongside local Hindus, many tourists participated in a cleansing ritual. A walk through the rice fields there made us realize how laborious farming is.

The city of Ubud is overcrowded and very loud, but there are still some local restaurants where you can dine excellently away from the hustle and bustle.

With our accommodation nestled amidst tropical gardens and with a refreshing pool, we found an oasis of peace after all.

Five days later, we continued south on the island to Uluwatu to check out the beaches and the local surfing scene. The traffic on the roads did not improve; in places, it could already be described as life-threatening.

At the end of our time in Bali, we agreed that while the island still has its hidden beauties, it is overall very noisy and overcrowded.
