Beaune,
as a graduate of the Alte Kurfürstliche Gymnasium in Bensheim, I also know Beaune as an Odenwälder. Although I haven't managed to visit Beaune yet, I once dropped off my daughter there for a student exchange with her host family in a nighttime operation. Maybe my distant attitude towards the French language played a part, after all, it was my third foreign language to learn after Latin.
Fortunately, we have smartphones available today, with which we can access all imaginable information, including translating menus.
So, off to Beaune. For the journey, I also chose the auto route and arrived at Pl. Carnot in Beaune after just under an hour. The city was presumably much busier that Saturday than on normal Saturdays, likely due to the French having a long weekend because of the holiday, and secondly because there was a market in almost the entire downtown area. The weather also contributed its part.
I tried to explore the streets away from the market, reached the basilica, the wine museum, then headed towards the Hospices de Beaune. The square in front, Pl. de la Halle, was the busiest place. Although I was interested in the colorful roof of the hospices, the crowd there made the waiting time half an hour to an hour, so I decided to continue my journey towards Pommard.
Similar to the wine route, the wine villages are lined up next to each other. Wine was offered for tasting everywhere, and I chose Domaine Michel REBOURGEON. They had a simple ambiance, and if they can thrive without loud advertising, it must be due to the quality of the wine. The woman at the tasting did a good job, and I found what I was looking for, resulting in my catch of 6 bottles of red wine.
It is a light and easily drinkable wine; we opened a bottle that same evening and drank it with cheese and baguette.
From there, I mapped out my new route back to the harbor along the bike route, which initially went well. Gradually, the route led through the forests in the plain, and when my GPS sent me off twice into the middle of nowhere, I returned to the auto route and promptly found myself at the Beaune Merceuil rest stop on the A6 highway.
So, it's back to the way it used to be; in which direction should we go, where is the sun, and after what felt like a quarter of an hour, I was back near the streets known to Google, allowing me to swiftly advance towards Verdun sur le Doubs. At the restaurant L'Authentik in Allerey-sur-Saône, I refueled with fluids. I then rode the last meters again along the bike route and was able to take a picture of the mouth of the Doubs into the Saône.
So, greetings to Bensem, with Beaune, you have indeed chosen a gem as a partner city.
