Poznań - my first bad experience despite a beautiful city

Published: 03.08.2025

Coming from Gdańsk, I had booked a hostel room. That was already a bit tricky. I feel like there aren't that many hostels here in Poland, and they aren't as affordable as I've been used to in recent months. Welcome to the high season.

It’s nothing unusual to book a hostel room. The reviews weren't all great, but it should be fine for one night.
When I arrived in my room, I was shocked; there were bottles everywhere, a half-empty vodka bottle, and other drinks. The gentleman I was supposed to share the room with had spread his entire laundry over the radiator behind my bed, and I felt extremely uncomfortable even without his presence.

While I was thinking about an alternative, he came in and didn't notice me at first. He talked to himself, and when he discovered me, he started talking to me. All well and good, after all, we were sharing a room.
Despite my efforts to show him that I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to talk to him, he just kept rambling on. After he struggled with his English, I had to communicate with him through a translation app; he wanted to show me the city, saying 'a beautiful woman shouldn't be left alone,' then he wanted to go dancing with me, and he didn't accept any of my 'no's. I was certain that I needed to get out of there.

So I went to the reception and asked if I could get a single room. Luckily, that was possible. However, there were such strange people at this hostel that I didn't feel safe at all.

I then somehow tried to see some of the city and enjoy the last rays of sunshine. I was mainly wandering around the old town. After all the drama, unfortunately, there wasn't much time left, and I wanted to be back before it got completely dark.

Perfectly during the golden hour, I was wandering around the city. This way, I could soak up a bit of sunshine and replenish my vitamin D levels.

For dinner, I found a place where I could eat traditional pierogi. Pierogi are filled dumplings.

A little walk to aid digestion back to the hostel was also possible.

In the end, I didn't really explore Poznań and was only out in the city for that one little walk. However, what I saw was quite nice.

At night, I fortunately managed to sleep well, but I still didn't feel comfortable at all. I'm glad that this incident happened at the end of my trip and that I was able to use hostels calmly and with full trust beforehand.

I would always go to hostels again because they are simply an easy place to meet other people, especially when you are traveling alone. However, I would probably check various platforms with rather poor reviews beforehand and read the reviews everywhere.

If I visit the city again, I would probably do it with friends, and I wouldn't recommend the hostel 'La Guitarra' to anyone. Take care of yourselves!
